I have recorded approximately 80-100 videos, all using 1080, and have had two bad videos. Both were related to ultra cheap Walmart flash drives (Onn (?) brand). This records on everything else including external hard drives if you power the hard drive separately. I did record one Blu-Ray by attaching my Blu-Ray player. Worked perfectly. - Never had a copy protection issue. I've recorded from pretty much every commercial service. - The device does NOT get hot. It gets warm like all other electronics. My Roku gets warmer than this. - I'm not sure why people are confused over FAT32, ex-FAT and NTFS. Unless you are a masochist who would enjoy stitching together multiple video files, just format your media to NTFS and quit whining. It isn't complex. Just. Use. NTFS. - I've recorded tennis matches up to 6 hours long. No issue whatsoever. - Of course there is no time-shifting, scheduling function. If you want that, then just order a device capable of doing that. - What I use my device for: 1. Recording movies from premium services to store on a large HD, some of them I store on an external 1TB hard drive that I can plug into a TV or Roku. 2. Recording tennis matches to be transfered to PC to process into DVDs (if I ever get a Blu-Ray recorder I'll be able to retain HD on these). I haven't used the software. Apparently it adds some kind of scheduling ability via PC. As for the other functions the software seems to offer, I can achieve the same or better with freeware. A note on external hard drives: this device probably won't power one by itself. Just use 1) a HD that is powered by AC adapter or 2) a HD that has the split USB cable--plug the power USB connector into a nearby USB connection. I simply use the connection on my TV that the Cloner Box is plugged into. I highly recommend this device. Here are updates: - I NEVER have any kind of initialization issues. When I turn it on it just blinks blue/green for several seconds and pops on. I use a few actual editing programs if I want to edit video. "MP4 Tools" splitter/joiner is indispensible and I use it all the time. Review: Plug it in, it works - This is intended to remove programs from a DTV DVR for future reference, my use-case. I just got the box last night, it literally took longer to get it out of the packaging than to get it set up and recording the first program. And it came in a perforated zip padded envelope so no time spent looking up a knife or scissors to get it open. Plays well with the rest of the equipment string on the HDMI output. Had a brief period of several seconds when the monitor screen was black while it was coming up, then the picture was as good as before. Ran it overnight on one series show set, box was room temperature this morning so runs cool. I ran it overnight with a 256G Samsung USB drive, formatted to NTFS before using. Only downside to my unit is that the box is missing half the rubber stick-on footies. Get some better adhesive, OEM! There's several PC software packages that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website, you have to register the serial before you can use them for anything but a trial period. I've already got editing software, this isn't an urgent item for me. Only piece I really need is the scheduler. So a 16gb thumb drive is perfect. However, two things to remember: 1. format the thumb drive to NTSF. otherwise the recording will be split into 1gb files; 2. When you are done, click the recording button and it starts blinking blue and green -- DO NOT remove the USB drive until the blinking has stopped (watch it for at least 5 seconds to make sure). If you remove the drive too early, your recording will disappear. **Q: So this can record HDMI from cable TV box, even though it's encrypted for all but non-recording devices?** A: Yes.I was able to record from Roku, Amazon Fire TV, DirecTV DVR. All of these devices enforce HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection) over the HDMI interface. There will be no trouble recording from your Cable box.You may have to set the output resolution to a fixed resolution. My DirecTV box was set to change resolution depending on the channel. So my TV would switch between 480i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p depending on the format of the channel. When I opened this piece of junk, it came with instructions on how to hook it up, BUT NOT ACTUALLY USE IT! It is not apparent how you start or stop a recording: yes, I know it has a "REC" button, but when I first pressed it, it didn't do anything. If I pressed it and held it, it would go from blue to green. Nothing I did actually started a recording! Also, the manufacturer's website did not provide instructions either: I had to do some searching before I finally found a place that said you should only have to press the button once before the blue light starts flashing, indicating recording. I needed to turn the unit on and off in order to get that to work. For those hoping to record any sort of streaming content, like off a Roku box, be aware that will NOT work from any source, even YouTube ... a message pops up on the screen to say that the source is protected content. Like I said, my goal was to use it to record a live event, so no need for that Roku content, but still, the ability to record content was supposedly one of the selling features. Another selling feature to me was the ability to record to an external hard drive, not just a USB stick, so that was a motivating factor. I purchased a new portable hard drive, tested the unit out at home, and it captured as it was supposed to from an HDMI device (previously mentioned Roku, though all I could capture was the menu screen since it wouldn't let me capture anything else.) The instructions for this Cloner Box I found online mentioned that a Fat 32 formatted drive would work best, so I formatted the drive Fat 32 and headed off for my event. At the event, I hooked the Cloner Box up and attempted to capture to the external hard drive: lights were flashing on the Cloner Box and the hard drive, so I thought we were good. I hooked the drive up to a laptop, and now the hard drive was corrupted: no longer readable! So, I reformatted the drive, made sure it was good to go, and tried it again. Each time, whether or not I formatted the drive as Fat 32 or NTSF the Cloner Box would corrupt the drive and make it unreadable so I was not able to capture my event. At all. So .. there is nothing really I can recommend about this product: non-existent instructions for a product that doesn't do what it claims it would do. P.O.S. I will be returning it.
