The product of origin is China. However, it is very sturdy, easy to put together and takes up minimum space.

Is it sturdy enough for a school backpack without falling to one side?

Having seen kids with school backpacks that are bulging full. I do not think this coat rack would stand up to that , no. It is sturdy enough, but it will tip over if too much weight is put on it.
