Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a newly remastered edition of the classic self-titled debut album by the legendary Dutch Progressive Jazz Rock group SOLUTION. SOLUTION formed in Groningen, Holland in 1968. Featuring a line-up of TOM BARLAGE (saxophone / flute), WILLEM ENNES (keyboards), PETER VAN DE SANDE (bass guitar, vocals) and HANS WATERMAN (drums), the band recorded their debut album for Dutch EMI label Catfish in May 1971. A fine work, SOLUTION s music was a Progressive Rock and Jazz fusion that took influences from contemporaries such as SOFT MACHINE, but was uniquely their own. Tracks such as Koan , Phases and Trane Steps became classics of the genre and set SOLUTION as one of the finest Dutch groups of their era. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and includes a booklet that fully restores all original album artwork with a new essay.

GREAT DUTCH PROGROCK
WORTH NOTICING ABOUT THIS DUTCH BAND IS THAT THE PIECE TOMMY FROM THE ERUPTION SUITE ON THE ALBUM MOVING WAVES BY MORE WELLKNOWN FOCUS IS IN REALITY TAKEN FROM THE COMPOSITION CALLED DIVERGENCE BY SOLUTION.HOWEVER THAT PIECE IS NOT TO BE FOUND ON THIS ALBUM.THIS IS ALTOGETHER A MORE PROGRESSIVE ALBUM THAN THE FOLLOWUP,DIVERGENCE.IT IS LARGELY LONG INSTRUMENTAL PIECES WHICH REPRESENTS EXCELLENT PROGROCK.I THINK THIS BAND SOUNDS DIFFERENT TO OTHER DUTCH BANDS.ALMOST AS GOOD AS MY FAVOURITES,FOCUS,WHICH OBVIOUSLY THEN OWES SOMETHING TO THIS BAND

Instrumental based classic era Dutch Prog
The first thing that immediately strikes home about the opening section of this album is the assured and accomplished playing, and the beautifully clean recording. Ensemble playing at its best, Tom Barlage leads a four piece Sax/Flute, Piano/Organ/Elec Piano, Bass and Drums outfit with a pleasing blend of the happening influences of the time. There are plenty of tempo and dynamic changes which perhaps inevitably remind the listener of Focus, but also Pink Floyd, Van Der Graaf, Soft Machine, The Nice and even Frank Zappa. There are extended passages of jazzy soloing over pleasing well written riffs and plenty of first class Hammond backing to keep the interest throughout. It's fully 14 minutes into the album before Peter Van Der Sande's somewhat superfluous vocals make their first and only showing. His voice is not unappealing, but the focus and strength here is mainly instrumental, and the first four pieces flow beautifully into each other for the first 30 minutes of the album. This mood is rudely interrupted with the intro to epic closer `Circus Circumstances' which is a kind of jokey Focus type Dutch leap-around, which then rather surprisingly uses a direct quote of The Nice's `For Example' as a jumping off point for more bright and appealing jazz influenced prog.
