Q: What type shade screws on to the outside of the socket?

The shade does not screw onto the socket. There is a ring that screws onto the outside of the socket. You take off the ring and you can slip a lamp shade that has a ring onto the socket and replace the ring. The ring holds the lamp shade on. I used mine for canning jar lights. My husband cut a hole in the canning jar lid so that it would fit over the light socket, We then put the lid into the screw cap. Then you slip it on the socket and replace the ring. That's what hold the canning jar on the cord after you screw the lid to the jar. I hope this helps and makes sense to you,

Yes, the cords I received have an in line switch about 3 feet from the plug. I’ve got mine plugged into remote switches so we can turn them on/off from a button that can be placed wherever is handy.
