They got skills
I bought this based on a review I heard on NPR. It's a fun and enjoyable album, and the youth and energy of the band comes through loud and clear. The songs are clever, both in their lyrics and construction, yet have a fresh sweetness that you don't hear often these days.

Classic Rock but...
Mozes & The Firstborn is deceptive and wonderful. I sounds like classic rock, born in a garage in the U.S. but it's NOT! This intelligent and fun collection of songs rocks like the old days, but it's new. I played it for friends and they were happily mystified.

Simply good quality indie rock
Definitely enjoyable! Catchy hooks and lyrics that straddle the lines of creative, fun, somewhat abstract, but not too serious or silly... pretty much just right for providing some energy to the scene trough a classic sound. Fans of alternative rock, classic rock and contemporary pop-rock should find something to their liking with this album. Some times there are shimmers of a more intelligible, less depressed Nirvana-sound, others sound like the early Kinks, but definitely a unique blend that doesn't go too far in any one direction. I dig it.

Laid-back, psych-tinged garage-pop with plenty of good-time vibes
This debut album from Holland's Mozes and the Firstborn passed me by when it was initially released a couple months back. I had sampled a couple tracks on Bandcamp, and when nothing stood out after a minute or two, I moved on. There's just so much music out there that it's impossible to give a proper listen to all the dozens of new garage bands seemingly popping up every week. Well, I sure am glad I ran into an article on these guys the other day, causing me to give the album another shot, as it's a top-notch collection of simple, laid-back, somewhat ramshackle (in a good way) garage-pop.The closest comparison I can come up with is the sloppy-yet-sublime bluesey garage-rock of Nashville's Natural Child and Austin's The Strange Boys, in that the album's filled with similarly loose, melodic, good-time vibes that harkens back to 60s and 70s garage, but without being pure revivalism. Songs like "Peter Jr," "I Got Skills," and "Gimme Some" are nearly impossible to not bob your smiling head to the mellow, Stonesy grooves and "no worries" lyrics. The album moves into more psychedelic territory occasionally, and is at it's most tripped-out on "Party Crasher," which settles into a nice, slow hypnotic groove and slowly introduces some acidy lead-guitar noodling before really taking off into the stratosphere. Unfortunately, the song fades out a little too soon for my liking, but then I'm the type who, when a band gets into a nice groove, wants it to go on forever. The languid "Heaven Reprise" ends the album on a perfectly serene and spaced-out note.If this album is any indication, Mozes and the Firstborn are certainly a band to keep an eye on, especially for fans of garage. The music has a timeless quality about it. It would have sounded good 40 years ago and will sound equally as good 40 years from now. It's not even really my normal style of music, but there's no denying this band's talent for creating pure, unadulterated garage rock.

The lyrics are simple but age-relevant like in the song "Seasons"
Mozes & the Firstborn is a band from the Netherlands with a lean, garage band sound that was described on public radio as "sunny grunge." Their music is catchy and melodic but with edgy alternative overtones. The lyrics are simple but age-relevant like in the song "Seasons": "I'll take you to a world without seasons, where the fruit has no taste...where our love is just a waste." It sounds depressing but isn't - the lyrics are wrapped in a thumping beat and clapping chorus that makes it sound like an upbeat youth anthem. The oldest band member is in his 20's and their collective musical energy is refreshing and engaging. I can't wait for their next album.
