Exactly what this adult hockey student needed!
Ok, so I'm over 40 and have just been learning how to "hockey skate" and now I find myself in my first hockey "skills & drills" class at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, practice ice/facility of the Washington Capitals. This class is so popular, that it sells out well in advance and many of the 35+ students are repeats (as I will be for the next session).I was lost - I'm not enough of a life-long hockey fan or past player who already understood the fundamentals and so many of the guys and gals already knew what they were doing. I felt like if I asked simple questions I'd be disrupting the flow of the class (shouldn't be that way, I know, but it's how I felt). So I bought a couple of books to bridge the gap in my ignorance.I am SO PLEASED with this book - it was exactly what I was looking for! Chapter by chapter, it breaks hockey play down into the essential elements I needed to understand - offense, defense, positions, strategy, scenario-based plays, etc. It also went over several drills which means that when they were introduced in class, I had already been exposed to them in writing. In the locker room after the second class, another newbie expressed the same concerns I was having. I shared my book with him and when he returned it the next week, it was like a veil had been lifted for him, too. I'm going to recommend that the instructors provide a copy of this book to every newbie, every session! If you like to read an auto repair manual that breaks down the way an engine works or a computer/tech book that explains in plain English how to use your computer or build a web page, then you'll love this book, too.

Intro Book
Great intro book for a neophyte. I’d give it five stars, but it’s dated and in need of a bit of freshening. At times it’s dry with a lot words where a diagram or picture would be helpful. The Kindle edition sometimes has pictures or diagrams placed far from the associated text.

Great book to understandable hockey strategy
I had the opportunity to play every sport but hockey as a kid and had no real understanding of it.I bought this book because my son was starting it and it explains basic hockey strategy like no other. It's a great book for early players

Excelent Introduction to Hockey
My two teenage boys recently started playing on their school hockey team. Since I had never followed the sport, I wanted to learn the rules and strategy of the game. I wanted something fairly short and simple to understand that would give me a good overview of the game. This Sports Illustrated book is exactly what I needed. The introductory chapter covering the rules was worth the cost of the book. It is easy to read and explains the topic well. Recommended.

Great teacher for beginners
I was a backyard rink player as a kid and never had the benefit of a coach. When I began to pick up the game as an adult this year I bought numerous books on "how to" play hockey. Mr. Falla's book was by far the best for me.Simple explanations of the game and how to play it.Not too technical, not too long, and just right for me.HIghly recommended.

Not just for players
I liked the book so well that I bought a second copy. They are being shared by my four hockey playing Grand-kids. Also a great book for hockey Mom's and Grand-mom's who want to understand what the rules and penalties are all about!
