How to Build a Wooden Boat

This was recommended reading in the IIMS reading list for the wooden boat module. The author fills the pages with very opinionated comments. The description of the methods used to build wooden boats are hidden away and not very clear although the illustrations are relatively good.

This book has excellent diagrams and drawings of the steps to build a wooden boat. The author explains his choices for materials and tells how to make the pieces fit together into a traditional wooden sailboat.

Good book, but I am confused about the lofting process. So now I had to buy a second book to understand that process.

I am appreciative of anyone who takes the time to add to the works available on wooden boat construction. However, if this were the only book on wooden boat construction, hobbyists would be in trouble. The author is very simply not good at explaining how to do things. To quote directly from the book:"I assure you that I'm almost as confused as you are at this point, and I suspect that the pattern I have described is slightly more complicated than the one I followed when I planked this particular boat. You should, however, be able to figure it out, from the above, the general scheme of attack."Unfortunately, he is only partially correct. I believe he was confused as he wrote this. You will be confused. You should be able to figure it out, but it will only be by reading another book on wooden boat construction.So, go get yourself one of the other classic books and read that, then come back and look at this one when you want to see a different picture or alternate diagram or maybe read a different explanation of a particular step of the process.

If you want to learn the terms and techniques of building a wooden boat, this is the book for you.

Bud is a great writer and builder. Very no-nonsense with a lot of horse-sense. I look at it constantly while figuring something out in my boat shop

Got it as a present for my husband - a wooden boatbuilder. He loves the book. ANd our sons do love it too.

The book is well put together both with high quality photographs and good information for a skilled wood worker to build a wooden boat.

This book I would classify as systematic guide, written for those who are planning to build a wooden sailboat. This is indeed a 39'00 "yacht but the work is so substantially identical with those for smaller boats.Almost every step is described according to the series of works and provided with illustrative sketches. Almost every operation is to be depicted and illustrated.The interested amateur boat builder will makes it fun to read this book. You are planning a boat build ? There are plenty of important information, you can also use this book in the construction of smaller boats. Advantage: you can take wide parts directly, or at least transfer them to your works.I do not want to miss it. It's almost like a guide to building not only larger boats and especially not only for professionals boat builders.It was Indeed a good and very helpfully buy for me.

Un bravo costruttore di barche in legno viene chiamato "maestro d'ascia": l'autore di questo libro è senz'altro un maestro.Si tratta di una gran bel libro, sia dal punto di vista letterario che da quello tecnico, che spiega, e illustra con disegni, come si costruisce una barca a vela dalla A alla Z, ossia, dal disegno sulla carta, al varo.I molti disegni sono eccezionali, tutti fatti a mano con grande abilità. Il libro meriterebbe il voto massimo anche solo per i disegni.Consiglio questo libro a tutti gli interessati al mondo delle barche in legno.
