Watchable
Spokane high school wrestler Louden (Matthew Modine) wants to lose a few pounds so he is the correct weight to take on the rival team's terror, Schute. Meanwhile, he and his dad happen to meet Carla (Linda Fiorentino) and, because she has no place to stay, invite her to live with them. Louden falls in love with Carla, but Carla says she sees him as a stepbrother. Will Louden make Carla his sweetheart and defeat the mighty Schute? The opening credits say the music is by Tangerine Dream, but there is very little Dream and more American rock music. Madonna makes an appearance - not acting, but singing two songs, one of them Crazy For You.It was all a bit juvenile for an old man like me, but I thought Linda Fiorentino (the reason I watched the movie) was good.

A great film about youth and the power of dreams
Vision Quest is a flawed movie, but also a movie that transcends its flaws with the emotional power of many of its scenes. One of the great movies of "coming of age" with one of the great, fully rendered male youths I've seen in this type of movie. The sex is handled very realistically, without romanticizing or simplifying Modine's character.I think the thing that makes this movie so memorable is the soundtrack, and the use of the soundtrack. Youth movie directors of today should refer back to this movie to see the power of song used in the right way, not just to promote a CD. This movie makes me believe in the yearning of youth and what you can accomplish and the complexities of becoming a man. It also makes me remember a time when songs really had impact. The soundtrack is still available today, that should tell you something. Even the Journey song rings true, as incredible as that may seem.On the rental version of this movie, the back cover presents this movie as a "feel good" film. I don't agree. It is an inspiring movie, but also achingly real and sad. There isn't really a happy ending, it is more like a snapshot in time. The hero, Matt Modine, doesn't sail off in the sunset with a girl. What you are left with is more of a snapshot of a time to remember, a time that is in retrospect too short- but a time that had such possibility and hope that you would never ever want to forget it.

classic 80's movie
I'm the proud owner of this classic movie. I will be the first to admit that my review is a bit biased simply b/c I am a former high school wrestler. That being said, this movie does have depth and doesn't play on a one single note like so many sports based movies. Although at times critics will cite the "cheesiness" of the film especially since it was made in the 80's, this movie still holds up till this day b/c it captures the true essence of what it's like to be wrestler wanting to be the best.Lowden Swain's character played by Matthew Modine wants to be the best and will go to extreme measures to achieve his ultimate goal, which is to wrestle and beat the immortal "Shoot". In order to do so, he must cut from 190 down to 168, if my memory serves me correct (haven't watched this in awhile). Like most hardcore wrestlers, he starves, spits, wears rubber suits and runs to school in order to lose every ounce possible on his semi skinny frame.Yes the movie is predictable. Yes there are scoring discrepencies during the final match. But to nitpick is to lose focus on the big picture. Any minor flaws seem to be swept under the rug by the relationship between Lowden and Linda Fiorentino' character (sorry forgot character's name). In addition, there are some uncomfortable yet realisic scenes with one of Lowden's teammates who is raised by an physically and abusive father.Overall, Vision Quest will always have a special place in my heart. I would like for Hollywood to make another wrestling movie but if that is never to happen, i'm more than content to have Vision Quest be my "go to" movie when I want to reminisce about my wrestling days.

Decent Date Movie for People My Age (Way Back When) and a Good Rental for Those That Missed It at the Theatres (haha)
"We think we know the story pretty well already: Young wrestler has two dreams: (a) to win the state championship, and (b) to win the love of a girl. The defending state champion is a man-mountain who carries telephone poles to the top of stadiums.... " credited to Roger Ebert on 2/15/1985.Long ago, this was the very first film I took my soon-to-be fiance (and now wife of going on 29 years) to see at the local theater. Had enough action/sports to entertain me and enough romance/drama to interest her which means we were both left happy. If 4 out of 5 people are liking the movie according to my favorite film review site "Rotten Tomatoes" and Roger Ebert (whom I've always respected) gave it 3.5 out of 4 stars I would think that qualifies as a winner. For that reason I thought I'd surprise her on her birthday and give it to my wife for a gift so we can relive some memories. A good movie with a great soundtrack and one I would recommend, too!

A Must-See For Aspiring Wrestlers (mature theme noted)
We purchased this movie for our sons who are in Middle School and High School to see the intensity and drive needed to be champion wrestlers. The character in the film wanted to wrestle an undefeated wrestler who had become something of a legend. In order to do so, he had to work hard and lose quite a bit of weight in order to wrestle in his weight class. He was not heavy to begin with either. The film speaks to commitment, drive, setting and achieving goals, intensity, good sportsmanship, team ethic and to the spirit present in young men. Matthew Modine was excellent in this film and has gone on to star in many more equally excellent films.A note to parents, there is a mature theme to this film as there are some sex scenes in the film, so take note of this. They are not excessive nor graphic in nature. Modine's character also encounters a homosexual man, whom he very neatly rebuffs and avoids correctly. In our opinion...GOOD FOR HIM!All in all this film was good for our sons to see as they are becoming young men and are aspiring to be excellent wrestlers too. If you're looking for great sports recovery, anti-aging, anti-oxidant supplements... [...] . Don't pass this one by.
