I leveled the dirt out underneath and raked the mulch on top and just pressed them into the ground. I have a wooden bench sitting on top of them. In highsight, I would have bought something else. These tend to "fade" and look white after a season; now they definitely look like plastic and not stone. I thought they would be more like the rubberized versions I saw in stores. Guess I could look at just spray painting them with a sand colored mixture; mine are brick red in color. **Q: I would want to put a fire pit on this. Doesn't seem like they'd withstand the heat underneath the fire pit, am I correct?** A: Absolutely DO NOT put a fire pit on this product. It is made of some sort of plastic and will melt or start a fire. **Q: What about under a trampoline? Do i need to put sand under them?** A: I would suggest it.
