It should work if the cork in the 6 liter bottle is the same diameter as one in a regular 750 ml bottle.

is the sleeve for the prongs made of metal?

Yes, the sleeve is made of metal and protects the prongs nicely. I carried this opener to Germany a few years back, and will frequently stick it in my purse or backpack for picnics etc. The one downside, in my opinion, is that this style is not the best for fizzy wines, like a Muscato, that are under pressure and flat corked.
