FINALLY!!! The 1941 Fleischer Animated Superman Gets The Action Figure Treatment!
Back in 1985, I was a kid with a $5.00 bill in my pocket and a membership with a now out-of-business local video store chain called Front Row Video. I was looking for a VHS tape to rent, and was about to give up when, browsing the dollar cartoon section I came across a tape that had a collection of 9 Superman cartoons that I’d never seen before. I first witnessed the animated Superman watching the original Super Friends cartoons in the 1970’s, then four or five years later a local tv station began airing the 1960’s DC Cartoons. That’s where I came across the Superman of that era as well as his appearances with the Justice League of America, but this… this VHS tape had me intrigued. There was no way that I could leave that rental store without this tape. I was about to be introduced to the Golden Age animated Superman for just one dollar! I was entranced by these nine episodes. I was already more than familiar with the Golden Age Superman from the comics, but this was something entirely different. I spent a good time of my growing up watching and recording old movies from the Golden Age of cinema from American Movie Classics when it was more like Turner Classic Movies is today, and to see a version of Superman that came from this time period was one of the coolest things for me at the time. The differences were so glaring. I felt that instead of watching televised cartoons, I was watching mini animated movies. The 60s and 70s animated versions couldn’t compare. This Superman had me hooked. In the two weeks that I had that tape I watched it again and again and again… probably topping twenty complete viewings. I would go on to re-rent that tape until one day I noticed that it was no longer available. I asked what happened to it and was told that it had been watched so much that the tape had become so worn out that it finally got ruined getting chewed up in someone’s VCR. Then a few years later, I came across a collection claiming that there were SEVENTEEN episodes! That meant that there were eight more episodes of this Superman that I had never seen, but I was about to. I was disappointed to find that after all seventeen were watched that there would be no more, but I was so captivated, that over the years I have picked up any version of these cartoons that I would come across. That is my history with this version of Superman. So… Imagine my shock and surprise when watching videos on a popular video site and seeing that there was an official set of figures made from these cartoons. After viewing unboxing videos of this set, I just had to see if anyone on Amazon carried it. Sure enough it was there, but it wasn’t cheap. Seeing as how the set includes 3.75 5PA versions of a great looking Superman (The closest thing to this version in action figure form prior to this were the 6-inch posable and 4.5-inch bendable version, both from the Justice League: The New Frontier comic book mini-series and animated movie line where Superman looks like George Reeves wearing the Fleischer cartoon costume), Clark Kent (not many of these prior except the vintage Super Powers mail-away and the 12-inch Mego doll), Lois Lane (the only prior one that I can think of is from the DC Direct Silver age Lois and Superman two-pack), a large Mechanical Monster figure from one of the episodes, but also a telephone booth for Clark to change into Superman, a colorful cardboard diorama, extra arms for Superman, plus a few minor accessories… well… I finally decided that the set was worth the price. The box itself is so great looking that it will make a great display piece. I only wish the figures were at least the size of Super Powers or Secret Wars, but then the cost would probably be higher. This is definitely the most that I’ve paid for anything action figure related, but there was no way that I could pass this up.5 Stars all the way!!!
