Audiophile performance for peanuts!
The pHAT DAC is a neat 'hat' or plug on board that gives you audiophile high quality analogue stereo output audio from your Raspberry Pi. Although primarily designed to suit the Pi Zero (and Zero W), there's no reason why it couldn't be used with a Raspberry Pi 2 or 3 with a 40 pin connector. The board comes without the GPIO header socket soldered so you will need to do a bit of soldering if you intend using it as a HAT. For the price though this DAC represents amazing value for money. Sound quality is really excellent when connected to a decent pair of active (amplified) speakers. Note the output of this DAC is line level so it won't drive speakers directly, but can be connected to a stereo amplifier. I am using it with one of the popular 5V 3W stereo digital amplifier modules and it sounds fantastic! There's a 3.5mm stereo jack socket on the board for connecting to amplified speakers or an external amplifier, but you can optionally solder photo sockets or just a screened output cable if you prefer. Although the DAC has a 40 pin connector, the board actually only needs 6 of these to function. So you only need to connect pins 1 (3.3V), 2 (5V), 12 (GPIO18), 35 (GPIO19), 39 (0V) and 40 (GPIO21) for it to function (as far as I am aware). Setting up the DAC is easy enough as it uses the same drivers as the Hifiberry DAC so popular Pi apps such as Volumio or OSMC will support it. Even if your Pi already has analogue audio output such as the Raspberry Pi 3, this will knock socks of it in terms of sound quality and background noise levels. Definitely recommended for this price, a true audiophile 24 bit DAC!

Just buy it
Superb value and sounds superb.

and seems to work fine. Yet to get mpd to grab Internet radio
Needs soldering - provided riser needs to be soldered onto the board. Not a problem. Clearly it will not fit on an original model B Pi, as the number of pins do not match....So plan B...Added to a Pi 2 which I loaded with a vanilla Jessie Raspian, and ran the script linked on the package. Seemed to work, but...Many hours on the web to get it going, and seems to work fine. Yet to get mpd to grab Internet radio, bit I will.Generally I would recommend - certainly a good price, but needs some persistance!

Easy to set up.
Have bought a few of these now. Great way to beef up Pis audio.Great for making SpotifyConnect widgets!

Paperless product
Comes with absolutely NO instructions, not one piece of paper indicating what pis do what, or which way round to connect anything. Buy it at your own risk I suppose.

Works brilliantly with the Pi Zero
Works brilliantly with the Pi Zero. Easy enough to solder the female GPIO headers.Attached to the Pi Zero only through the GPIO pins. I think this product should have been supplied with some spacers to help stabilisr the whole contrapture like they do with the Iqaudio DAC+.

Good quality DAC
Easy to install and set up. I'm using it as the sound output for FluidSynth running on a Pi Zero (WIFI/BT).

Good product, massive improvement in the audio quality
Massive improvement over the built-in audio. The output is clear and well balanced. I am using it with RetroPie to play PSX games with headphones and the PiTFT. Only downside is that you need to solder the pins onto it yourself and since it comes with the pin header, I don't understand why it's not sold assembled and have a separate version without the header. I can' solder so it isn't a big problem for me but it might be for people that have a Pi and simply want to improve the audio without getting too involved.

Run code from website to get it working
Exactly as described, added to the raspberry pi, ran supplied code from website and everything works

Marche parfaitemant

Easy to get running (after soldering the 40 pins, that is), awesome little bundle of joy. Even my mother came by and noticed "there's something different with the sound", as I was playing music. I have it on a Rpi 2 running Kodi. Settings are straight forward, unlike other third party components that require a couple of days worth of research and hacking to get them to work.
