Hourglass: A 'beautiful, funny, profound' (New Statesman) debut novel about love and loss

A quick paced thriller.
The way the story was executed is really cool and new. Other than that, the story is really intriguing. I love how it ended, especially. The characters are written well, and the merging of past and present is neat. Mr Mandal is an amazing story teller, someone to look out for. :)

Intriguing
Hour Glass is author Mrinal Mandal’s debut novel, taking you on a thrilling adventure, with the God v/s Man story line. The plot is set between the Gods and humans and how humans travel to another realm to save their people. The story begins with the main protagonist, Aditya, waking up from a coma after five years and having lost his memory. The book takes you on a journey with Aditya as he meets the God of Death and is reminded of the deal he made in exchange for his life. The story has many twists as it progresses and the characters are developed. For a first attempt at writing, Mandal has penned a good story. However, the book could have used more editing as it is peppered with grammatical errors. The storyline also has several loose ends which leaves the reader with questions while approaching the climax. The character sketches lack detail. The pace of the book keeps changing leaving the reader confused.Overall, Hour Glass is a read that is easily finished in one sitting and uses easy language without any complexity in understanding what is happening. We look forward to more compelling books from the author.*** The Quill Company received this copy from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review***

Mind boggling thriller with a hint of fantasy
In the deal between two worlds, can you see the truth hidden behind the truth?Hourglass is a mind-boggling thriller with a hint of fantasy. It's really great and nicely written keeping in mind, the book is author's first till date. Mrinal Mandal takes you on a journey where Gods will collide and humans will ascend to the other realms to protect the world and it's people. The character of Aditya, being the protagonist is nice, complex and written in depth. Story is captivating and had me hooked to it till the very end, till revenge was served brutally still in grace. I highly recommend you this book if you love thriller, fantasy or fiction.

A love of a life time revealed through immersive ironic verse
The 'Hourglass' s' grabs you from page one and does not let go. It is a book best read in one long read without the distraction of people, music, or the noise of the world. The author pulls the reader into the mind of a fallible young man who stumbles headlong into an all consuming love affair impossible for him to maintain. The two sentence paragraph structure of this work blends dry self effacing wit, introspection and tragedy into what at at times feels to be a prose poem both cutting edge and ancient. This is a book to treasure and on completion kept prominent on the bookshelf. A thing of beauty worth dipping into from time to time to both laugh and weep at the world and the heroic absurdity of our ways.

Charms despite its faults
This very short debut novel reads like it was written on Twitter by someone who is very pleased with himself. And yet I liked it. It is part love story, part look back at callow youth from a vantage of slightly less callow youth. The love story progresses mainly by the narrator reporting the clever things he said. His lover is almost invisible. The city is almost invisible. The whole novel uses an annoying typographical device where every sentence is a paragraph. These are all bad points but it manages to overcome them because it is funny, even charming, it whips along at a rapid pace, and is never boring. There are glimpses of a much better novel. The relationship with his mum is real and touching and I could have read pages more about the job centre or the tap factory. Some of the writing is beautiful, and when he writes of the devestation of lost love it is affecting and completely convincing.
