Are You Being Served? The Complete Series & Christmas Specials [DVD] [1972]

The complete Package really is a great release. Are You Being Served? is great, filled endless innuendo, hilarity and mischief. The Pilot episode is only shown in black and white on this release where as there is a colour version on the separate series releases released years ago by the BBC. The comedy stays strong throughout the first 5 series with episodes such as Camping In, His and Hers, Big Brother, German Week, Shoulder to Shoulder, Christmas Crackers, Fire Practice, Take Over and It pays to advertise being amongst the funniest of the series. With the departure of Mr Grainger the series dips slightly but still manages to keep the audience laughing, however it is obvious that with the departure of Mr Lucas the comedy does go down hill and becomes more and more outlandish, however the series is still fantastically funny with great episodes like, The Night Club. Overall this series is fantastic and provides the audience with hours of endless comedy!

Splendid, lovely to watch something that has not been altered by modern 'woke' ideas, worth watching for that alone. However they did struggle to keep the stories going a bit towards the end, except the last one which was a surprise. Well worth the money.

Love this timeless classic brings back great memories of a time when TV was about entertainment and the public , Great characters perfect plot lines for each episode, always colourful and fun filled and appealed to a wide range of society , Comedy at its best , tv as it should be

I can't even remember how and when I got into this series but am sure glad I did! Incredibly funny and completely unlike anything you see today. Pretty good value but you can't really put a price on so many hours of laughter. Great to have the whole lot in one box set to bring out every now and then for when I've got a free hour or so or to cheer myself up. Classic 'Britcom', one of my all-time favorite programmes.

Always loved this programme, shame it had come to an End. At the time Porridge won the choice for broadcasting. Wonderful charectors and acting before the day's of PC. Excellent quality DVDs. A Must to buy .

I have been a fan of AYBS since it first aired on TV back in the 1970s. I had managed to collect the odd episode from local TV re-re-airings during the 1980s and 1990s, complete with annoying commercial breaks, but with so many episodes chopped up and/or missing, it was very difficult to enjoy. However, when I saw this complete boxed set from Amazon, I jumped at the chance to become re-acquainted with this classic comedy series. They are all there - even ones that I don't recall ever seeing before, and the video transfer is excellent. Some of the gags and other references are topical, and steeped in the 1970s, which may leave younger viewers a little bemused, but there are genuine laughs in every episode. The assembled cast members work so well together that it is difficult to imagine anyone else playing their parts. This BBC boxed set is packaged in a well-designed clear plastic case, which opens like a book. The DVD discs are securely held in their place, and a printed episode list guides you through the various episode titles. Well worth the money!

Oh buy this please ........ you will laugh your socks off! Are You Being Served? is a British sitcom created and written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft (Croft also directed some episodes), with contributions from Michael Knowles and John Chapman, for the BBC.[1] Set in London, the show follows the misadventures and mishaps of the staff of the retail ladies' and gentlemen's clothing departments, in the flagship department store of a fictional chain called Grace Brothers. This really in a gentle way led the now the world to be introduced again to camp humour made famous from the Carry on Movies featuring Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey and really the Carry on cast. Are you Being Served (this is still watched in many english speaking countries around the world today) allowed at the time gayness and campery to be enjoyed by all the family. Now the series is quite passé. And yet people still enjoy the light if not rude double entendre that was all the rage in the 1970's though to to 1985. A brexit, Are You Being Served, sort of quote - Miss Brahms: Well if England's a such good country you've cracked it up to be. How come then we've got strikes & inflation. Mmm? So what's so good about England then? Captain Peacock: I shall tell you what is so good about England Miss Brahms. It is the only country in the world that isn't semi-detached. Dont you just love that humour !

What can be said about this classic British comedy, that hasn't been said before? Hilarious, and harmless fun, that has you chuckling from start to finish. I highly recommend this complete collection to all lovers of British comedy.

La série se passe à l'étage prêt-à-porter dame et homme d'une grande surface et raconte les aventures des vendeurs et autres personnages. C'est de très bon ton, de l'humour britannique typique. Bien que la série soit ancienne, +/- 40 ans, elle est une réelle bouffée d'air frais et surtout inattendue et complètement en décalage par rapport à ce que l'on peut voir aujourd'hui, un vrai moment de détente simple mais efficace, les meilleurs. On se surprend à sourire pendant 30 minutes et même souvent à rire. On aime vite les personnages et on les attend à chaque épisode; ils sont tous de style très différent, un peu extrême, et c'est le jeu entre eux qui est à la base du plaisir que l'on a à regarder la série. Chaque épisode est différent, on découvre une autre "aventure" à chaque fois. Personnellement, j'aime beaucoup Mrs Slocombe et ses "yeux de biche" ainsi que ses coiffures extravagantes, et Captain Peacock, 2 personnages haut en couleurs. Les scènes "Are you free" sont extraordinaires ainsi que celles avec un automate, surtout si l'on se replace de nombreuses années en arrière, elles montrent le génie des auteurs et acteurs. Je recommande très vivement la série pour qui veut se distraire réellement. Bonne nouvelle, les sous-titres français sont disponibles, parfois utile avec l'un ou l'autre des personnages ayant un accent ... un peu difficile, mais on peut saisir l'ensemble et s'amuser aussi sans ces sous-titres, une excellente manière d'apprendre ou de se perfectionner en anglais. On y voit aussi parfois la délicieuse Johanna Lumley (Purdey dans Chapeau melon et bottes de cuir, Patsy dans Absolutely Fabulous) dans ses 1ères apparitions télévisées je suppose. Malgré l'âge de la série, l'image et le son sont excellents.

Beim Rumstöbern in Youtube bin ich auf ein paar Episoden dieser nicht in Deutschland ausgestrahlten Comedyserie gestoßen. Wenn man so bedenkt, was die Unterhaltungsabteilung der BBC in den 70ern und 80ern so alles produziert hat, von Monty Python's flying circus bis hin zu Yes, Prime Minister, dann muss man nachträglich den Hut ziehen. Are you being served? lässt sich für die älteren Zuschauer mit einer Mischung von Büro, Büro (die frühen Folgen) mit etwas Stromberg, und in ein Kaufhaus verlegt, vergleichen. Allerdings gibt es, anders als bei Stromberg, keinen unsympathisch angelegten Charakter. Alle haben sich am Ende wieder lieb. Das musste ich komplett haben. Technisch hat man die Produktionszeit der 70er und frühen 80er nicht ganz kaschieren können. Die Körnung ist in den Staffeln 1 und 2 deutlich zu sehen; ab der 7. Staffel wirkt die Bildqualität auf mich besser. Der Ton ist nur Englisch, auf Wunsch mit Untertiteln. Ob etwa das ZDF auch hier eine schöne Schnodder-Synchro der 70er Jahre hinbekommen hätte, werden wir nicht mehr erfahren. So bleibt aber der Wortwitz der Dialoge, von dem es reichlich gibt, unverfälscht erhalten. Leider auch das eingespielte Publikumsgelächter aus dem Off. Liebhaber der leichten Unterhaltung und des britischen Humors können bedenkenlos zugreifen. Zehn komplette Staffeln feine britische Comedy plus Weihnachts-Specials für knapp 60 Euro sind m.E. ein faires Geschäft.
