Review: A very effective and easy way to add a final razor edge to kitchen knives - As so many five star reviews attest, this is proving to be a very effective knife sharpener. We use it as intended, which is on already quite sharp knives to add a final razor edge, a process called honing, I believe. It works marvellously well, especially thanks to the clever angle guide built into the handle. For the price we paid, the quality shines through. It is certainly a solid and very well made product. Well done to the manufacturer and to desertcart for making it available.
Review: Good steel, for beginners and experts. - High quality item and works well, I've been a chef for 25 years and used many different brands. I have a large knife collection, all quality gear and I look after my kit. One thing I need to say about this product: steels aren't to sharpen knives, they are for honing! Sharpening is done with a whetstone when the knife is dull beyond honing and will grind metal off the blade to give a sharper edge. Every few months or so for me, if that, and even if I'm using the knife daily. Honing can be done hourly and doesn't take metal off the knife; it just knocks the structure of the knife edge back into alignment giving you a razor to work with if done right. Knowing the difference between sharpening and honing is important; I learned this late in my career and have some seriously eroded and unusable £100+ knives to prove it. So its a honing steel rather than a sharpener... Just saying. Anyway, the angled guides on the handle make this steel easy to use, from beginner to grumpy old chef you will just get it and actually like it because the results are consistently spot on. The steel was inexpensive and cost less than a fifth of many of my knives but I am impressed and definitely recommend it. There's no sign of wear after a year of heavy use. So, if you're on the fence, as an experienced chef I would highly recommend this steel, I got one for my mum too 😁

## Features

- The extra-long Sharpeak sharpening steel rod features built-in 20-degree angle guides for consistent and accurate sharpening angles.
- The magnetized steel helps to keep metal shavings contained for easy cleanup, while the fine-grit surface of Sharpeak sharpening steel allows for quick and efficient sharpening of knives without requiring a lot of effort or skill.
- While some sharpening rods claim to be 30 cm in length, it's important to note that this measurement may include the handle. However, Sharpeak sharpening rods have a rod length of 30 cm, excluding the handle. With the handle included, the total length measures 45 cm, making it suitable for sharpening a wide range of knives, from small chef's knives to large butchering knives.
- The hone and realign feature of the sharpening rod can revive old knives and maintain razor-sharpness for extended periods of time.
- The ergonomic handle and hexagonal hand guard provide safety and comfort during use, while the hardened steel with chromium plating ensures durability and longevity.
- 3 YEARS of Commitment and Superior After-Sale Service: Sharpeak, headquartered in CA, US with branches in Germany and Australia, ensures easy and cost-effective sharpening solutions. All products are rigorously tested to the highest standards.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is rib spacing on a sharpening steel, and why does it matter?**
A: Rib spacing refers to the distance between the raised ridges (ribs) on the steel. Closer rib spacing (like 0.2mm) provides more sharpening interfaces, allowing for more efficient and precise sharpening of the knife edge.

**Q: Why is the hardness of a sharpening steel important?**
A: Hardness in HRC is key for a sharpening steel's efficiency and durability. It's essential for honing high-quality knives made of hard steel, as a harder steel sharpens a broader range of knives effectively.

**Q: How does rib integrity affect the sharpening process?**
A: Rib integrity ensures that the ribs maintain their shape and effectiveness over time. High-quality steels retain their rib structure, ensuring consistent sharpening results and prolonging the tool's life.

**Q: Can I sharpen serrated knives with a sharpening steel?**
A: Sharpening serrated knives with a typical sharpening steel is generally not recommended. This is because the standard sharpening steel is designed for straight-edged blades and may not effectively reach the recessed areas of a serrated knife.
