Straight to the point!!!!
I really liked the concise method used in this book. Straight to the point. The reader doesn't get lost in all the turmoil surrounding this battle.

Beautifully illustrated with in many cases historic paintings
Beautifully illustrated with in many cases historic paintings. The maps were clear and vital for a good understanding of the battle. An outstanding book for anyone that wants a clear, concise and accessible description of the Battle of Waterloo.

Disappointed
Despite all the hype in the description and the reputation of the authors etc - I was disappointed. These historians love to show off their vocabulary and use of fancy words - we've seen them on TV, they don't talk like this, so why do they write this way. Why can't they write in plain language? Very difficult to read and absorb and the book doesn't break the battle down very well into the key stages. Maps are very poor, nothing on uniforms, etc. Generally I've seen history magazines sold over WH Smiths do a better job than this over rated book.

Rather flawed
The presentation of this is beautiful. The pages have tasteful parchment coloured backgrounds and the copious images are large and well produced. The text is clear but very much ‘coffee-table’ in its depth that suits the overall publication. However, the main issue I have are the four large envelopes stuffed with sources. Superficially this is great until you try to use them. The vast majority are letters that are virtually illegible. A should-have-been-fascinating soldier’s book including punishments was all in French. So I found most of these sources pretty useless practically. What was needed was a transcript of all of the documents and then they would have been fascinating insights into facets of the battle. As it is I found this glossy and attractive but poorly thought out in terms of the utility of the sources. I have very similarly structured books with documents on D-Day and Victory in Europe published with the Imperial War Museum that are far better than this.

2 versions of this book
Bought for my dads birthday. Just watch aw there are two versions of the book. One has pullouts like letters etc the other is the version I bought which is a hardcopy. Great book but some people might find it more like a "coffee table" read given the amount if detailed text.

Too complicated.
Book not a simple page turner. Every ten pages or so the page is formed into a type of folder with pictures of completely unheard of Generals, Dukes and stuff. I'm not going to read it. I'd not recommend it.I may as well have thrown my money away.

What’s not to like?
Two of the country’s best historians take on one of the most pivotal battles of British history.Well-told, with a stunning collection of artworks reproduced to accompany detailed background of the battle, insights into key moments and protagonists and detailed diagrams all come together to provide an immersive account, so vivid one can almost hear the cannon fire as you consume this excellent book.
