Is this the same as 278A? I need to know if it will work in a HP LaserJet1536MFP.

yes - they are the same item - HP CE278A HP 78A Toner Cartridgeand yes - the 78A works in the HP1536MFP - i have several of them.

My printer uses 85a can i use this as a substitute?

Compatible with HP LaserJet Pro M1132, M1138, M1139, M1212nf, M1217nfw MFP, M1219nf, P1102, P1102s, P1102W, P1106, and P1109W printers! I wouldn't substitute any other.

I bought this on Amazon on 1/18/2018 at a cost of $66.29 plus tax. Why is it selling for $87.89 plus tax? That is a 33% increase.
