Bison Boa did it again!!
I grabbed a pack of these a couple of months ago after having previously bought a Bison Boa Relic Ready guitar strap and being ultra impressed with the quality of the strap and the company’s attention to detail. Checking out their other stuff I fancied the Splinters. So I’ve used them for a few weeks and I can review them with a bit of experience now…….The first thing I noticed about using a wooden pick isn’t the tone, it’s the feel of using wood. Yes the picks are nice and comfortable to hold but that isn’t what I’m getting at. I don’t know what it is but you seem to ‘feel’ the strings more through a wooden pick. I suppose as natural material it isn’t a totally solid mass like a plastic pick would be so maybe you feel the string contact more during playing because of the natural structure of wood? Whatever ‘it’ is it makes using wooden picks great and I’m a big fan now. It’s a totally tactile playing experience. In terms of tone I can definitely hear a distinctive tonality between woods and I think this is where this pack of picks really stands out. It is a complete tonal range from softer through to brassy tones and you actually know which woods are which because of the information card. I remember buying some wooden picks off ebay years ago and I had no idea what woods they were made from. With this pack you actually get a little education on how to identify which woods deliver the tone you like. While I bought these picks for myself, if you were buying them for a present you wouldn’t be disappointed. The woods look beautiful and they are really well made. The tin they come in is a nice pocket size plus the hand signed quality control card and wood tone information make this feel like a premium set rather than just a generic pack of anonymous picks. To sum up: well made, great tones, pleasing on the eye, good to play with and a really classy package with useful information. Seems to offer the best bang for the buck when compared to other wooden picks I looked at because you get five of them. If I lost my set I’d order another tin straight away which is a good measure of how much I like them. Absolutely a wooden pick convert now and if you’ve never tried them you should.

Top class picks with huge tonal variations too
I have used probably hundreds of different picks over the years. Most of the plastic ones you can buy are much of a muchness - just different thicknesses but no massive effect on tone. However, I have been trying to find a way to really affect the tone to be sure to be able to accentuate each string depending on the style and song I am playing or player I am trying to emulate.I LOVE these picks so much I bought a second set too. Firstly, there are some massive tonal variations with each of these woods which is great but more importantly for me, they are much more pointed than most picks and for my style, it has improved my picking accuracy significantly over other types of wooden picks which tend to have a much more rounded picking point. The second main advantage of these picks is that they are shaped on the front and back to make holding them and also holding them in their optimum position easy. It improves your consistency is you are holding the pick in the exact same position each time and these have impressions in the wood which make that a reality. They are also extremely hard-wearing. I have given mine an absolute battering and apart form a bit of discolouration on the paler woods, you would not know that they had been used. Lastly, they are presented in a nice tin. This might sound like a moot point but honestly, as these are lovely pieces, it does make it more likely that you keep them together and safe.Overall, a really super product and for a tenner, unbelievable value and would make a great gift for any guitarist if you are considering them for someone else.

Worth a shot
Like most people I imagine, I bought these as an experiment. They do sound slightly better than the usual 3mm big stubbys I use but they are a little large so not as easy to shred with. I prefer the ebony and I’m planning on sanding it down to a shape closer to the stubby.

Wow. Functional and beautifu
Bought these ages ago on a whim and in the 3-4 months I’ve been using them I have to say they are the best picks I own or remember using. The tone changes between each wood are subtle, but definitely there and the grips do exactly what they are supposed to. I play pretty hard and the grips mean they don’t twist round in my fingers, which is great because it always a problem I’ve had over the years. They’re still going well after a lot of play time so no complaints about them not being robust.I am also a sucker for good looking guitar gear and these don’t disappoint. They look absolutely brilliant with each pick being totally unique and interesting in it’s own right with colour and grain. Checkout the grain on my Rosewood pick! I suppose the nice thing is that these are going to look different each time you get a pack so could be fun to collect.Overall presentation is really strong too with the tin and the card and where else you get hand signed quality control on guitar picks?! Really nice for a gear head like me to be able to read the information on the card and actually learn something.Extreme quality and a great playability. Great guitar gear. Great price and overall package as a present for a friend or a stocking filler at Christmas I imagine.
