More details are needed to answer this question. Today's mains transformers are very efficient, but every transformer has power losses. You've told us nothing about the item you are working on. If it uses a heavy mains transformer you should consider using a Switch Mode Power Supply instead. These are very efficient also, and they are almost weightless compared to the old fashioned heavy metal transformers our parents used.

It depends upon the current flow you will have! You are considering dropping 96 volts. If you have 1 amp current flow you would create 96 watts in your resistor. This resistor would then be to small!

Q: Wondering if I can accomplish the voltage reduction with resistors?

Of course you can! That's why they are called resistors! These Gold Tone ones are excellent, but they would be better with fully deburred metalwork. I have to file it off to secure a perfect contact with my heatsinks. You will need to access Ohm's Law to learn the arithmetic of it.
