Squire Sonic Mustang Electric Guitar, 2-Color Sunburst, Maple Fingerboard

First off, this is not a toy. The guitar's single coil pickups sound pretty good. I'm in the process of rehabbing a brachial plexus injury to my fretting hand and the neck is good enough to help me do that. There were a few sharp fret ends that needed to be filed, but other than that the few high frets don't seem to affect the playability. There is no string buzz. I use either tens or elevens for strings, and that keeps tuning issues to a minimum. Even with thicker strings than I used on full scale guitars, the bends are much easier. It's also between six and seven pounds, so not heavy, but not so light that you aren't aware its there. The pots are dime sized and the switch has a little play in it, but again, this is a really inexpensive short scale with really good playability, even with my bad hand. The intonation is easy to set on all but the low E string. I may have to remove the spring/shorten the screw for that one, but again, I'm not playing for anyone but me, so it's not like it's critical. And I'm sure it's fixable. I would highly recommend this guitar for anyone who likes a shorter scale, but doesn't want to play a true "mini" guitar, which would be about two inches shorter. And if you haven't tried a short scale guitar, you may want to consider trying this just for fun, or for a travel guitar.

I had to adjust the neck right off the bat but since I was moving between the Central Coast of CA (arid-ish) to New Orleans (very much the opposite, 90% humidity) I've learned how to adjust the truss. What I personally like about this guitar is it's very different from my other two stalwarts. I have a PRS 30th Anniversary SE with an ebony 24 fretboard (like it betta than my '83 Gibson LP custom, IMHO) and an '83 MIJ strat, I radically modded the electronics, and a rosewood fretboard. So this is very different. Neck has a nice shape, medium frets feel thin compared to the others but good.Oonce the neck is popped in, has nice low action. Not out of the box, so definitely get that adjusted. YouTube had some great DIY vids. Reading other reviews were helpful. I had a set of D'Adddario 10s so I replaced the strings, a must. I usually play 10s but you might take the info I got from a reviewer and use the next size up. I like the the 10s on it, but 11s would also do given the short scale length. Pickups: was fully prepared to replace the bridge with a SD JB hotrails, but after listening to the ceramic pickups thru the Boogie I like the heretofore mentioned contrast. Sure, noisy-ish on high gain but they sound very woody and open as low imp pickups tend to. Middle selector is very useful. At the moment I'm very satisfied with the sound and the really good playability. This one has no practical fret issues. I highly recommend it. Not 5 stars, because, well I have a PRS. Unfair..If this is your only guitar I'd recommend at least replacing the bridge pickup and while your in there maybe a push/pull coil tap for a humbucking p/u, I love the Duncan JB series, esp. the HotRails. Oh, after playing it for a bit had to slightly adjust the intonation on the low E. Again, Youtube to the rescue. But truss nad strings are a must. All said, darn good value, nice addition.

I bought this guitar mainly because it has a short scale and a smaller offset body, and I also bought to do mods.The frets are a little sharp on the edges and overall pretty level.The pickups are fine , but I bought it with the intention of changing them and the pick guard.I would highly recommend changing the tuners. I put Gotoh Schaller style tuners I bought off of Amazon and they dropped right in.I’d recommend tightening the neck screws and bridge screws.This is a nice guitar for the money

I like how it feels and sounds. It's a fun little guitar to play around on. But it's unacceptable that it came with fairly substantial damage to the finish. Really upset about this.

For the money this guitar is fine. The problem I have is with Amazon. Tried several times to send an interesting video but couldn’t get what ever that takes to work.

This is my second Squier Mustang (I have a Bullet in Imperial Blue that I modded into a Mustang-90), and it’s absolutely beautiful. I put roller string trees on it and I plan to shim the neck and install locking tuners like I did with the Bullet. Paint job is perfect, fret ends are smooth, neck feels great and the hardware is all in good shape. Highly recommend this guitar, great for beginners and pros. It’s basically a much cheaper version of the Fender Player Mustang.

This is really a 3-star guitar, but it gets an extra star just for being a Mustang. I think the more faithfully accurate neck radius feels and plays excellently. The single coil pickups have ‘that’ Nirvana clean sound when you get your amp settings right and obviously scream like banshees with high gain, but pro tip: if you’re buying a guitar with only single coils for a genre that uses a lot of distortion, you better want feedback and screeching as part of your soundscape. Anyway, it’s a beauty, it’s lightweight, but oh my god, does this thing have issues with the neck and nut when it’s stock.Everything was arrow straight, relief was good, and the bridge was actually set up to my (slightly high action) tastes for rhythm playing, but the nut was cut way too deep and the sides of this thing are razors. Almost every fret is jagged and some of the wood isn’t sanded well or is just sort of splintering from storage conditions. I’m not sure why I love my Mustang, since it’s cut the sides of my hands (both, if you’re wondering; tapping sucks) so much that they’re now covered in omnidirectional callouses, but this does feel like a $200 guitar. I’ve since taken an angle grinder and other assorted tools to this knife-disguised-as-an-instrument, rendering it much less likely to maim my girlfriend when she borrows it, but yeah, YMMV.My Bullet Mustang was perfect when I got it back in 2023, but the neck wasn’t as suited to my tastes.

Recently bought the Squire Debut Telecaster and this guitar did not have fret ends sticking out that needed dressing. You can tell this came from a music store (Steve’s) as it was set up decently and the sharp fret ends were removed. The Tele came straight from factory. Nice short scale guitar, the maple fretboard has very neat grain pattern to it, seems to be a one piece neck with the truss rod secured by fretboard glued on top. No skunk stripe on the back of the neck. Nice player may change the tuners to locking ones. I wanted a Duo Sonic but this Mustangs scratches that itch nicely.

I own 2 Fender Strats and a Jazzmaster but thought I'd try the Mustang as something different. After a minor adjustment to the setup (lowered the action, and adjusted intonation), the guitar played very well, comfortable easy to play neck, well finished frets, and a crisp bright sound as I'd expect from the single coil pickups. Being a bit smaller than a strat the guitar is very comfortable to play sitting or standing, and overall I would say the guitar is very good value for money.
