The description has me a bit confused; will this still click while the rod is extended?

Yes! You hold the purple handle and the green ball on the end is attached to an antenna-- you can extend it anywhere from a few inches to a few feet. Then, just click the "clicker" with your thumb! I love this tool for training. The clicker is very easy to use.

I have a small cockapoo who sometimes refuses to walk on leash. Can I put a treat on the end of stick to coax him along

This stick is intended to be a target. Look up Karen Pryor's books on clicker training, you would teach your dog to touch the end of the stick to get a click/treat. Then you can use the stick as a target for him and he will want to walk and touch the end of the stick to get a click and a treat. That's training the dog. If you don't want to work on the training, you could easily put some peanut butter on the end of a wooden spoon to get the results you are asking about. Your dog might come along and try to lick the peanut butter or whatever other treat. Good luck

It comes with a small booklet, but if this is your first exposure to clicker training, you would be better served with a more comprehensive book, or a video. Clicker training is very effects, but timing is very important

This sound fun, I'm not really understanding target training. Where might I get information?

Susan Garret on you tube has a clear and excellent video using this same tool and she gives the reasons for this targeting. She trained dogs for movies among other things. Stellar unique famous trainer.
