Great Litter Box!
Thank you Petmate for making a litter box for cats that stand to urinate! I have 2 cats and one likes to stand when she urinates. This often over sprays litter boxes with shorter sides. My search for high sided litter boxes has been challenging. Many have 3 high sides, leaving one side low for entry for the cat. That works well for cat's that know they shouldn't turn their backside to the low side! My adorable baby didn't read the memo and would often over spray right out the door (thankfully onto the waterproof mat under the box), lol! This Petmate box eliminates this elimination problem! All sides are high. It cleans up easily with soap and water. It helps to contain the litter for kitties that like to dig. Highly recommend! A few suggestions:1. Add adequate litter to weigh down the box so kitty doesn't tip the box while coming and going. My girls like to put their paws on the edge to strategize their entry and exit. If you only have an inch of litter in the bottom, the cat can tip the box over. I go with 3 inches of litter on the bottom to prevent this.2. Take off the top if kitty is skittish. My girls like things open and airy. Most cats do NOT like to be confined while eliminating. Part of their survival instinct dictates quick getaways. Additionally, cats like their boxes clean. Topless boxes allow odors to escape and are less offensive to cats. My girls had no interest in the box until I removed the top. Now they hop in and out with no issue.3. Chunkier kitties may need a step stool for entry and exit. One of my girls is a little fuller in the figure and likes to use a sturdy, wide based step stool to get in and out of the box.

Huge improvement
My rambunctious young cats throw litter around like it's their job. Even "high sided" ones have lower entrances which render them useless against my cats' litter-tossing inclinations. But these! These work. My boys can now power-blast litter to their hearts' content without making the sort of mess I until recently had to vacuum up daily. They can also pee like idiots without any going over the side and then under the box, which used to drive me crazy. The top entry panel keeps them from tipping over the boxes which they would surely do otherwise (see "before" photo). In short: excellent purchase, wish I'd gotten them sooner.

Very pleased!
I have a number of cats and a number of litter boxes. I added this one to the mix with some trepidation. Some of mine have not liked covered boxes, and this one seems covered to the max. Plus years ago, when the top entry boxes first appeared on the market, they were very expensive, like around $75 if I remember correctly. I thought it ridiculous then as I would now. So at the time, I bought a storage box and cut a hole in the lid, figuring with litter inside it should do the same thing. But my cats wouldn't have anything to do with it. My creation was a total failure. I was skeptical of that kind of box ever since. But I saw this one at a good price (under $20) and thought I would give it a try. I'm really glad I did. Two of my cats took to it instantly and seem to love it! Maybe it's a kitty privacy thing. A third cat -- one whose almost 17 -- appears to be thinking it over, sitting on top and trying to decide if she wants to go in. I've only had it a couple of days now, and it can take cats awhile to adapt. And I still have other boxes for them to use. Anyway, I like the size. It seems roomy enough without being overwhelming in our small house. It's sturdy as well. I kind of wish the lid had a hinge to just swing it back without completely removing. It's really too small an entry hole to scoop the litter through, so I have to take the lid off. Not a real problem, but I'm just saying. The one possible drawback is that it is deep, so it requires some leaning over to clean. I'm short and have back issues, so that's a bit of a hurdle; however, the depth of it adds to the boxes ability to contain the sand. And besides pleasing your cats, that's pretty much the selling point of these: the sand does not get all over! I guess odors are somewhat contained as well. I have just ordered a second one of these for my daughter's room because the scattered litter is bothersome for her. So I do think this box is a good solution. I can't say for sure that every cat will like this box. It is different from what many are used to, and cats do not always like the same thing. A friend of mine loves those Breeze boxes, but my cats have never much liked that system. But for us this Petmate one is working out well. I would suggest leaving the kind of box they are used to in place during a switch over, just to make sure they are comfortable and there aren't accidents. It's better to have extra boxes with a multi-cat household anyway.

Pleasantly surprised!
Where to begin! Let’s dive into it:The main reason we bought this: litter control. We have 4 cats and 2 of them are absolute menaces when it comes to making a mess. The top part definitely does its job. Not 100%, but pretty darn good. You may notice some litter sitting around on the top part, but it’s easy enough to carefully remove and shake any off into the actual bin. Oh, and just make sure to put the side with the entry hole against a wall. I’m taking a star off because that top part fits very loosely. It’s easy to accidentally pop it off too hard and potentially get litter all around. Don’t put the liner in between where the lid and bin connect, it makes it even easier to pop out. You’ll have to pull some bag aside to avoid the connection. Also, I’m starting to feel the bag liners are almost pointless, with the reason above coming into this. It’s hard to get them to fit well in the pan, and they rip very easily when scooping. Smell-wise, it does an ok job. All in all I do recommend this. We had that big robot litter machine thing and I hated that. It seemed like more work than a regular litter bin.

Time and Mess Saver!
This stopped the litter mess around the box from our 2-yr old male kitty. He liked it right away and it made life lots easier for us.

From the AMATURE LITTERBOX TEST TEAM - THIS IS A WIN!
Goldilocks and the two cats? Ms. Diva Cat has sent me on a years long search for the perfect litterbox. The latest issue is Missy likes to stand up to pee. Even with a domed litterbox this is an problem. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to realize that fitting the lid to the OUTSIDE of a litter tray will DIRECT THE PEE OUT OF THE BOX ONTO THE FLOOR for those kitties who spray instead of squat! Have you ever crawled inside of a domed litterbox to duct tape the seams, to keep the pee inside of the box? And then discover that the pee has lifted the tape, and you have puddles of cat pee on your floor hidden under the litterbox? (Ggaahhhh!!!!)THIS BOX IS THE ANSWER to Missy's litterbox issues!I wasn't quite sure of this box, since the top is a bit shorter than the top of the cats' heads when they are sitting up. But, I had three different boxes available to the cats during the first month we tried this, and they both started using it immediately. THE CATS ARE COMPLETELY HAPPY WITH IT!My daughter didn't think that her cats would want to go inside of it - however CATS & BOXES- it's a thing. That box design makes this litterbox an irresistible cat place, and the litter makes its purpose clear to them. The sides are tall enough that if Missy sprays, the pee stays in the box! If the side of the box gets dirty, enzyme spray on a paper towel cleans it right up, and then gets tossed in with the soiled litter. And, of course, energetic diggers don't toss litter onto the floor either, since the sides are high enough to contain it.Some reviewers complained about the lid being flimsy. My cats are 10 lbs, and 11 lbs (or more) and the lid easily holds their weight. On mine, the lid does not snap onto the hinge side, but it does stay securely on the box. When I clean the box, I simply lift it the lid up, (and shake it over the box in case there is a bit of litter on top) and then clean the box. It is easy to clean (I have a long handled scooper) as I can access it from above, and don't have to try and crawl and reach inside that pesky dome box! This box is so convenient and successful, we are planning to purchase a second box.

Works but could be better
To my surprise, my cats all use this. They love anything new, and now they are all going in this one litter box when there are 6 in the house. I have several cats. I bought this specifically to put in the back bedroom where I had a standard, open litterbox. The cats were kicking litter everywhere, so I wanted something to keep the litter contained but yet be somewhat compact, unlike my other boxes which I have designed like furniture. First and foremost, the dimensions of this are not as stated in the description. However, I see that there is no measurement now in the description. What I saw was "Item dimensions (length x width x height): 20.29 inches x 15.07 inches x 15.2 inches". The box narrows at the bottom and is not nearly as big as the dimensions state. See pic. This really concerned me because I have big cats, but based on the ability to stick their head out of the box while they're using it, I guess they don't need as much floor space as I thought. The reason I gave this three stars is because the lid is not securely fastened. None of my cats have knocked it off when jumping out like other reviewers say, but I can see how, if you have clumsy cats, they could knock it straight off when they jump out. The hinges are not snug at all. But even worse is that litter gets caught in the edges of the lid so when you open the lid to scoop the box, the litter falls to the floor. This is what I wanted to avoid to begin with. It's not a lot of litter and it is much better than my previous standard litter box....but still. The only way to avoid this is to unhinge the lid and dump those little granules back into the box. There are holes "close" to the edges, but that does not help with the litter that gets caught "in" the edges. I will be looking at other ones with a different lid design because of these issues, but I suspect this may be a problem with them all unless there is a slit in the corners. Hope this helps others. Still a very nice alternative to the standard box and definitely keeps the dogs out.

Total game changer!
I had been using a covered litter box tray, but my dogs would still get in for cat poop treats. This box is the perfect solution. No doggie snacks at all. I do use the liner with it and pretty litter. Clean up is so easy and I now have zero litter tracking and zero odors. I couldn’t be happier with a cat box…unless it came in other colors. For reference, my girl is a chunky 13 pounder and she fits easily into the hole and box and the lid is entirely stable to hold her weight. Ok, I do have one tiny complaint. The hinged lid doesnt stay together at all Its not an issue for us in any way, but it is a disfunction of the product. The idea of a hinged lid is nice but I think a snap on lid, like a storage container type would work better here.

Best purchase I made this year!
This box has solved two major problems I was having. I have two cats and one dog. My male cat would sometimes aim his rear too close to edge of the litter box and would end up urinating outside the box. I noticed that sometimes he was standing while urinating so I knew I needed a box with high sides. I adopted my dog (Rat Terrier) last year and quickly discovered that she was a cat poop lover. I had to keep the cat box in the bath tub to solve these issues until this wonderful Petmate Top Entry Box arrived!!! Its a large box but luckily fits into my small bathroom. The cats figured out how to use the box from day one. I keep the box next to the toilet so they hop onto that to get on top of the box. I am very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend this box to anyone with dogs who troll for treats in the cat box. Its a nice looking box as well.
