I chose the rollaboard style (2 wheels) as opposed to spinners (4 wheels) which are not as sturdy and durable especially over uneven pavement and cobblestones. And the softside fabric exterior won't show rough handling as much as shiny, hard plastic luggage. Decades long frequent traveler. This meets requirements of domestic and international carriers for carryons. The bag is well built from sturdy yet lightweight materials. This is for serious travel: the two wheel option is good on cobble stone in Paris or Kyoto. If you are the kind of traveler who travels once a year domestically and all you do is wheel it from terminal A to terminal B, a spinner (four wheels) may be better for you. Also, domestically you can generally get away with a slightly larger bag (21 in or even 22 in). But for serious travel this is perfect: It is lightweight, has two wheels (not four) which works well in rugged environments and maximizes pay load dimensions (four wheelers waste space, you loose one inch) and importantly you will not be asked to check the carryon when traveling internationally.

This luggage rolls so nice and easy and has the two wheels vs the spinners that it allows the case to hold more items and still fit almost every airline that measures a carry on. It has a firm and nice extendable handle that allows for a nice balanced load. The pockets and zippers work nicely and have ample room for extra items. I am extremely pleased go have this and look forward to using it on my trips.

I had been wanting a carry on luggage for sometime as I recently started getting into flying for vacation and I wanted an option for when I’m not checking a bag. A frequent-flyer-friend of mine suggested I get a soft sided Travelpro for carryon since it has more give. She also suggested this case with two wheels because 360 spinner wheels tend to add to height and may make it harder to fit into an overhead bin. I used this for the past week for a 6 day/5 night trip to Disney and it worked out very well for me. I flew with American Airlines and I had no issue fitting it into the overhead bin, both before and after some Souvenir shopping. I fit all of my clothes (and clothing accessories like ponchos and bags) into this luggage and placed most of my toiletries into my backpack. I only used the extender on my way home to fit some extra souvenir clothing I bought. The extender makes one side of the big deeper, so it looks like it has a belly. I like the handle on the side which is useful for lifting up into the overhead bin. The two wheels are very smooth, make it easy to roll and the stands are great for keeping your bag sturdy and stable. The only issue I had with this bag is that it is a little wide for airplane aisles to roll. It just about fits going down the aisle, but that means I have to roll it behind me or push it in front of me while trying not to bump into seats or people. It was easier for me to just carry it in my hand through the aisle. Fortunately the case itself is not too heavy, so carrying it by hand through the plane was a very minor sacrifice. I’m looking forward to using this bag again as a carryon! While I only slightly regret not getting the 360 wheel version, I’m very happy with this purchase. Update: just used this for a weekend trip to Cancun and this case fit perfectly fine in the Spirit overhead bin. Thankful again for the soft exterior because it easy to stuff some souvenirs inside!

Note: The color selection when I purchased this bag (and as of this writing, still on the website) says the bag is "Slate Green", but it is actually black. The manufacturer mentioned in the Q&A that this bag does not come in green. The exterior overall dimensions for the International Expandable Rollaboard are: 21.5" x 15.75" x 7.75", which equals 45 linear inches (55x40x20cm = 115 cm). This fits the current carry-on requirements for many airlines. The interior dimensions are 20" x 15" x 7.75", and the weight is 5.4 lbs. The label says the volume is 45 liters. I already own the Osprey Ozone 18"/36 L Wheeled Luggage, Black that I LOVE as a carry-on, but, but I wanted another bag that would fit most carry-on requirements but also be sturdy enough to check it. (The Ozone is really well made, but because the shell is soft (like a backpack), things inside might get crushed.) The Travelpro bag looks like it will be perfect. It seems very sturdy and well-built, including the well-padded fabric handles on the top and side. The wheels also look very solid. The expansion section is a nice feature, although using it may exceed size requirements for a carry-on for some airlines. Nice for having a little extra space if that's not an issue. Besides the main opening for the interior, there is a large outside zippered pocket that is the full length of the top flap (I don't have a laptop, but it looks like it would probably hold up to a 17" laptop), and also a smaller zippered compartment that is about 6.5" deep. Great for keeping your boarding pass or anything else you want quick access to. The interior is a light-colored plaid fabric, which I prefer to black since it's easier to see things in it. There's a large mesh pocket on the top flap, and a small interior pocket on one side of the main compartment. This particular piece also comes in a "spinner" version Travelpro Luggage Maxlite 5 International Expandable Spinner Suitcase Carry-On, Black , which has 4 wheels on casters instead of the 2 inline wheels. I know a lot of people like spinners because of the ease of pushing them around in any direction, but I chose the rollaboard over the spinner for several reasons: casters are more likely to get broken than inline wheels, I don't have to worry about my luggage rolling away if I'm on a slope, and I find the 2-wheeled bags easier to control over uneven surfaces. But most important, for the same exterior height, rollaboards have more interior space than spinners because of the extra space required for casters. As a comparison, the interior dimensions for the spinner model are 18 x 15 x 7.75, which is 2" less in height than the rollaboard. That's a difference of about 232 square inches, and in a small bag, every little bit helps. Plus the exterior dimensions for the spinner are actually slightly bigger than the rollaboard, at 21.75" high instead of 21.5" high (same width/depth). That makes the total linear measurement of the spinner 45.25", which slightly exceeds some airline maximums of 45".

Full disclosure. I am a Tom Bihn fanatic and compare all other bags to my phenomenal experience with that brand. The only thing I wished Tom Bihn did produce is luggage with wheels. So after researching and watching several videos for lightweight carry-on suitcases, I finally pulled the trigger on the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable 20" suitcase in black for my Significant Other. I chose the model with the two-wheel configuration for his personal comfort and also pointed out that two wheeled models usually have more interior packing space. Two imbedded wheels vs four wheels sticking out can affect the overall dimensions of the piece. Something to keep in mind. And it will not roll away from you if left unattended. The collapsible handle of the Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable suitcase works smoothly - locks and unlocks into place easily. The overall design layout is intuitive without being overdone with too many pockets. My SO gets frustrated with too much organization - tee hee. The zippers seem sturdy as well as the overall material it is made with. The expandable portion is great because it is hidden (or tapered) towards the bottom half of the case. A brilliant and low-key way to bring back a couple pieces of souvenir clothing or other items from your travels. I help my SO pack since, and if I might brag a little, my packing game is on point. I traveled to Ecuador (five flights to Cuenca, b.t.w.) for almost three weeks with just a 45 liter backpack using the 1-2-3-4-5-6 Packing Rule from an REI expert. My SO used that same pack for a couple of trips but now wants the weight off of his back. This Travelpro will work perfectly for his needs as a carry-on paired with a small personal item. Would I purchase another if I needed one for myself? YES! But in a different color. <smiles>. And that is another great selling point for Travelpro - ALL of the color choices! REVISED 2/24/24: I thought I'd add a photo of my homemade repair for the broken legs. It's a 6" piece of wood 2x2 (actual dimensions 1.5x1.5 inches) screwed on from the inside with 4 short deck screws and washers. I wanted a slightly longer piece but this was what I had and it works. I first sanded the edges round, then spray painted it black. Then I drilled pilot holes from the inside, then marked and drilled smaller pilot holes in the wood. It held up for the same 4-flight trip that broke the original legs last fall. FYI, Travelpro sent me replacement legs, no instructions, and their install video is several years and models old. No offer to have the thing repaired at a shop. And what's the point in installing the same legs that will just immediately break again? This company really doesn't care anymore. REVISED 2/13/24: My previous review (below) was absolutely mistaken. When I pulled this out for another trip today I realized that both legs were already, after ONE trip this past fall, breaking off (see photo). So this new version of the Maxlite is complete junk. AVOID it completely! Previous Review: I bought this to replace a previous Maxlite version in a slightly larger size. This one held up fine packed to full airline allowance of 50 pounds on a recent trip. However, it is clearly made of flimsy materials and I won't be surprised if it doesn't last as long as the previous one, which became unusable when the rigid plastic lining started disintegrating into shards and a wire stay poked through the back cover. And the major deficiency of the new one is the replacement of a usable plastic handle at the bottom of the old version (for two arm wrestling of the bag into a car or onto a luggage stand) with a fabric flap on the new one that's not big/deep enough for a proper grip. Oh, and as other reviews have noted, the wheels appear to be a less durable design that will be difficult to repair when they break. Overall it's O.K., but like many other products the newer versions are not as good, made more cheaply, and are more expensive.

The lightness comes from eliminating the hard walls found on other similar bags. However that doesn't seem to affect the contents of the bag much. Especially of you line the edges and bottom with harder/unbreakable items. The frame and fabric is very strong. They also sacrificed a little of the expandable storage area near the handle-end of the bag (the "top" when standing up). This enables a very nice feature: it stands up, and not just-so, but with a lot of stability. (I've never had a 2-wheeled bag that did that properly!) It will stand up fine packed to the max on gravel with another bag on top even. The wheels handle cobblestones and gravel just fine, and it isn't too loud when walking down the street at 5am.

Suitcase was wobbly/unstable upon receipt. I'm returning it.

Rezension nach 2 Jahren Gebrauch als Berufspendler: Exzellentes und smartes Gepäckstück mit sehr hohem Gebrauchswert. Ich bin über 1.90m gross und hadere sonst immer mit zu kurzen Griffstangen, was hier aber sehr gut gelöst wurde. Aufteilung durchdacht und auch nach 2 Jahren tadellos, somit durchaus vergleichbar mit Samsonite oder sogar Victorinox👍🏼

Excellent bag at a very good price. Light weight and provides plenty of space. Travelpro invented the two-wheeled roller bag and it shows. Very easy to pull along. The only issue is that the handle is not the smoothest to extend or retract. We have used other Travelpro bags for several years now and they are still going strong.
