can you switch between radio & sd card playing without removing the sd card

Dear Roddy, Yes, it can. you can switch between radio&sd card playing without removing the sd card. Best Regards PRUNUS Service

What is the max size of sd card you can use with the radio?

Dear Amazon Customer, Thanks for your question! The max size of sd card you can use is 64GB. Best Regards PRUNUS Service

Think this might be OK for my sister's stay in hospital, but need to know, can ordinary batteries (not rechargeable) be used.

Ordinary batteries cannot be used. The radio has a battery similar to that used in a mobile phone and is similarly re charged via wire link to PC or similar or mains adaptor. Hope this helps - it is a fine little radio.

how do you control the volume?

The volume control is on the top of the radio - a partially concealed wheel to the right of the on/off switch. Rotate CLOCKWISE to turn the volume DOWN; rotate ANTICLOCKWISE (COUNTERCLOCKWISE if you're American!) to turn the volume UP.
