Beach Bum Berry's Taboo Table

Update: we still use this book frequently for recipes. Especially a modified version of the Pitcairn salad dressing.This book is amazing and was added to our existing collection about many books on cocktail history, Hawaiiana, and vintage 60's tiki bars, etc. I made several food recipes and we made a few cocktails, but more importantly we absorbed all the history, art, and amazing tiki detail. Kudos to the Bum and Mrs. Bum. Pop into Latitude 29 some day and you may find us at the bar. Mahalo!

Cooks and barkeeps will tell you that its an arduous task to assemble a few recipes from the past. Toss in the fact that its tiki cuisine and the difficulty level rises significantly. This is a serious flashback for the taste buds. There is a recipe for Mai Tai Pie! 'nuff said.

While I am a huge fan of the Bum's tiki drinks books, I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed with this cookbook. None of the passion or quality that goes into his cocktail books is carried over here. Almost all of the (very few) recipes in this book are extremely simple to the point is hard to believe that any of these were ever made in a restaurant. Most rely on ingredient lists only 5 or 6 items long that are usually just store-bought sauces poured onto meat. Unsurprisingly, this lack of fresh ingredients or complexity shows as the recipes taste largely bland. Still, what's worse is the fact that the book is entirely black and white with an excessively large, cartoony font and gratuitous use of flower clip art which makes it look cheap and ultimately embarrassing to be seen cooking from. While I really want to be able to recommend this book because of how much I love Berry's cocktail books, I just cant - even if you only buy this book for some fun, casual, kitschy cooking, I still find it hard to justify such a short cookbook for the price.

Beachbum Berry is THE tiki historian. He's searched all over to find bartenders and their notebooks from the original tiki bars and has uncovered the best kept secret recipes. Get his book not only for the delicious recipes but for the histories behind them.

Beach Bum Berry is a bad ass! This book is great! As are the rest of his books. He has great information for anyone interested in the Tiki world not trying to learn wrong information that is out there in abundance with the people recently jumping on the Tiki Bandwagon. Very easy, versatile recipes. Fun to read.

I love the vintage "Tiki" phenomenon, so I will be collecting more and more as I can. This is my 2nd BeachBum Barry Tiki guide.

If you're into tiki this and other Jeff Berry's books are a must have. Great insights on food and drinks, as well as history and curiosities. So many hidden gems! I only wish they made a hardback cover version or a collection of all the pubblications with nicer prints

Very interesting ideas for food to have at a tiki party, or even to make for yourself while you enjoy an exotic cocktail or two! It also includes a number of cocktail recipes not included in Berry's previous cocktail books. If you're new to Beachbum Berry or or looking more for cocktail recipes, I'd suggest starting with either Intoxica!, Grog Log, or Remixed (which is a compilation of both Intoxica! and Grog Log plus new/updated recipes. If you're already a fan of Jeff Berry, it's worth purchasing this for the additional drinks plus the food!
