I am fitting a log burner in my motorhome would this be ok to

I don't see why not. My husband has used it to install a log burner in our log cabin.

Can I paint this board and if so, does it have to be primed. What paint and primers can I use?

I painted mine black with fire proof paints and its okay

Can this be used in an open coal firw on the walls?

No, you need to use either fire bricks or fire cement. This fireboard is really designed for use with multi fuel stoves such as wood burners and protect from radiated heat. In particular where the stove pipe goes into the flue liner, providing a seal between the hearth and the flue. It i also used as a surface to count tiles on in humid conditions such as in a bathroom.
