As former TSA, I say if you need to take one & travel, then use a new in the package unit. If its wiped & tested by the chemical detector then you'll be charged with a Federal law potentially. Just be safe & don't carry a used one. It's worthwhile to get the new one & not risk it. Plus in some places, just paraffinalia can get you into trouble so stay safe.

OK, I'm going to reveal something here that I've kept my secret for a very long time.  I'm a smoker of extracts, waxes, and they can clog a filter really fast.  I take anywhere from 4 to 6 huge hits every night.  In spite of that, I get up to 9 months use from one of these.  But, I don't just use it out of the box as it comes.  I insert cotton balls into the mouthpiece opening, complete filling the space down to the filter with them.  I don't pack them too tightly, as that causes a restriction when blowing.  Also, I'm willing to put up with a fair amount of resistance to blowing.  I change out the cotton balls about 3 or 4 times during those nine months, when it gets just plain too hard to blow through it.  Now, if you're trying to hide oder, my method won't work.  It's not a perfect amount of filtration.  I can see a very small amount of smoke occasionally.  I use it to protect my bird, a Military Macaw who sleeps on a perch at the foot of my bed, and the bedroom is fairly small, so I need to protect her.  It's always worked fine for that purpose.  Also, someone asked about these in your carry on luggage.  There's a far better alternative to these for travel.  It's the replacement filters for the, "Eco Four Twenty Personal Air Filter - Aluminum with HEPA and Carbon Filters for Clean Air Filtration.  Works Naturally and Eco-Friendly."  The ASIN for the entire filter is, B07GL8GQBW   That filter is a metal housing, with replaceable plastic filter cartridges.  But, guess what.  You don't need that expensive metal housing.  The plastic cartridge filters for it work just fine without the housing!  And, you can buy, "Set of 2 Replacement Filters For Eco Four Twenty Personal Air Filter", ASIN B07GLC6THZ, for just $17.50.  That's just $8.75 @ filter.  When I travel, I carry one new one for each hotel I'll be staying in, discarding each one on check out from the hotels, so that I never carry a used unit & risk arrest.
