The syringe is very delicate, thin walled hard plastic that was destroyed during shipping. I was able to use the adapter on a regular syringe and the cartridges.The adapter for the cartridges is a silicon ring that allows the included cartridges to firmly attach. The included cartridges are standard international with the backs cut off. I am planning on taking Platinum, Pilot and Sailor cartridges and doing the same so I can use this on pens that use those types of cartridges
