great pedal
Its a great pedal. Sounds awesome. Good quality. This pedal is definitely overdriven but without losing the low end. Recommended

Meaty, midrange-heavy overdrive for bass
I love this pedal. I already had a fuzz pedal for my bass, but I wanted a more midrange-heavy version that could give me everything from very slight, just-breaking-up overdrive to full-on, old-fashioned distortion. This pedal delivers.

Nice warm grind
Nice warm grind. Does not go totally clean, but I only use it to back solos with a little more punch. Nice solid unit. What you'd expect from MXR.

well made but...
The clean sound is never really clean, even with the knob all the way to the clean setting. That's a drag because any kind of slap sound or finger style gets eaten up by the overdrive. The overdrive does'nt sound too bad but it breaks up too much even at the lowest setting so if you are looking for something with a lighter growl, like the way an SVT starts to break up, this probably won't be for you. Other than that, it's extremely well made with very nice pots as well. ***The bass big muff can get a really good overdrive sound on it's lower settings even though it's advertised as a fuzz. The bass big muff also is completely clean so slapping with overdrive sounds works out really well.

Better for bass than any guitar overdrive
SUMMARYPasses the low frequencies almost all guitar overdrives filter out. Overall a solid bass overdrive that performs very well with single coil pickups, but could benefit from design enhancements to the low range of the overdrive for active and humbuckers, to the location of the power supply jack, and perhaps a lower MSRP. The clean knob seems to be misunderstood by people in reviews. (Including me, initially.)PROS* perfect size* made for bass = doesn’t filter lows out* ability to mix clean/dry with overdriven signal* good overdriven soundCONS* location of 9v power input is often troublesome on mxr pedals and would be better on the back facing edge* Needs a switch or option for humbuckers and active pickups to allow very light overdrive.* MSRP $149.99 is a bit high for what this pedal is.OF NOTE:* Clean knob doesn’t function the way many people seem to expect it to.DETAILSThe first thing to know is that this passes bass frequencies that nearly all guitar overdrive pedals filter out. That means with this pedal the low end you hear and FEEL gets through, which is what you want. For that reason it sounds better for bass than pretty much any guitar overdrive pedal.CLEAN KNOB: A lot of reviews say this isn’t a blend knob, but it is. It’s just misunderstood. When positioned fully counterclockwise that is ALL drive signal. As you turn clockwise you are ADDING clean signal. I don’t think it goes all the way to full clean (dry) signal, but will be most clean when fully clockwise. This was opposite what I expected, but it works fine.I like the sound of the overdrive a lot. Depending on what bass I play it with it can go from light to pretty heavy overdrive. With a humbucker (stingray) or active pickups that are boosted up, it's harder or impossible to get a very light overdrive, so I'd have liked some kind of switch for single vs humbucker pickups. But if you have active single could you can get there by backing off the active controls. With a P bass, the light drive is pretty good. I’d say this pedal was designed with single coils in mind. It works GREAT with them in terms of overdrive range. Overall I wish it was better at going from NO overdrive to quite heavy overdrive with a humbucker though.I think MXR has raised their prices too much for what the pedals are. They seem overpriced. Thus the value isn't great on this at the $149 point. I don't think they are selling well because suddenly I see people selling them at $135 and even $115 new (StewMac on clearance). The used value is even lower than that.Dunlop/MXR needs to move their power supply jack to the back edge instead of the side right next to the pedal's input jack. It is ALWAYS in the way - this is just bad design in my opinion. On the plus side, I LIKE that they use the 4 flathead screws to secure the back of the pedal. This is VELCRO FRIENDLY and makes MXR pedals sit properly on any board that uses velcro to attach, because the back is FLAT EVERYWHERE.A solid 4, maybe 4.5.
