Animals, especially beginners, have SHORT ATTENTION SPANS, so keep lessons short, like 5 minutes long, and end on positive note. END THE LESSON BEFORE Your pet zones out or gets frustrated. FIVE MINUTES is plenty. YOu can repeat the lesson later on as often as you want, but, keep each session short and quick, because animals needs breaks, they do. and absolutely NO SCOLDING, none. POsitive only. Every click gets a treat, and keep treats TINY, ya don't want a full or fat animal. MAIN THING TO REMEMBER: IF YOU AND THE PET ARE NOT BOTH HAVING FUN? you are doing it wrong. If you need a hard click (loud click), go with a box clicker like those made by The Clicker Company (Doggone Good). The teardrop clickers are medium clicks which I like for inside my house. For outdoors or in large indoor spaces I like the box clickers. It is a softer click, good for inside an apartment or a small courtyard. I would not recommend it for a larger dog park or in an environment with competing noises.HOLDING: I included a pic of how I hold it, as some reviewers reported difficulty. Strap on middle finger, press thumb straight down towards middle finger. This is my arthritic hand and it works well.INSTRUCTIONS: DO follow the enclosed instructions; they are competent and helpful. While this clicker does work for dog training, it is actually a bit hard to click on the button. It will go down but it does (mine anyway) require a bit of strength and to push on it a certain way. It does free up my hand so that I can also hold a leash or if I needed my hands partially free for anything. The green loop on the back is a little bit too loose but it's not a big deal.
