How wide is the 20" bag at the bottom of the bag ?

I just measured mine and as you can see it is shaped somewhat like an octagon but you could put something in it that was 16.5'' X 8.5'' and it would fit nicely. At that size though you may begin to interfere with your interior pockets if any of your tools are long. I keep all my pliers and wrenches on the outside pockets. The bag feels extremely durable and the bottom has very tough, gripping feet. Also, the wide-mouth design is excellent!

where can I buy a shoulder strap?

I know why my bad and for what I use it for, it’s way to heavy to even use or want to use a shoulder strap. The handles on it work really well. I love this bag for work and holding my tools and so far own 2 so far and will be getting more as I need them.

Does the wide mouth stay open as in the picture or slump inward?

It does NOT stay open. I bought two different bags, this one and a Dewalt, with the intention of keeping the best one. I would've kept this one if it stayed open but it slumps inward. Defeats a lot of the purpose.
