Does this saw support any other size bars? Such as 18, 20,28 or is it specific to the 24 inch only?

You can change bar length as long as you stay with 3/8 x 0.050 chain size. I purchased an Oregon 16 inch bar for my saw for most cutting around my property. You can go to a bigger bar but you sacrifice power. Your call

Is there any way to get the military discount purchasing through this store, or do you have to go to a retail location?

Some business sites have that built in but Amazon is not one of those. Would be great if they were. Home Depot offers a 10 percent discount for military and so does Lowes

If this model overkill for home use and for one tree?

Depends on the tree. Most "homeowner" chainsaws have 18-inch chains or smaller. This chainsaw has a 24-inch bar. If you have never used a chainsaw, I would not recommend it for home use on one tree. Also, I highly recommend getting a forestry helmet and, if new to chainsaws, a pair of kevlar chaps.
