Excellent quality...better than my German kraut crock!
I bought a .5G and 1.3G crock from Humble House to test out. I've been fermenting off and on since 2007. Back then I started with a large, expensive Harsch Gartopf German crock with ceramic weights and a water trough. The German crock was just too big. I only ferment foods for me; doing small batches of kraut, kimchi and sometimes lacto-fermented pickles. These Humble House crocks are a perfect size for 1 person jobs or for small batch experimentation. These crocks are affordable, which allows me to own a number of them to ferment different foods simultaneously. The glaze and finish of the Humble House crocks is excellent! The German crock had a very rough finish and the weights were unglazed. I've sold the German crock and plan to buy a couple more of the smaller Humble House crocks. Very happy with them.My only complaint is the entrance hole on these mini crocks is a little too small and it is tough to get my whole hand in. An inch bigger would have made a big difference. Also, the wood stamper is kinda small diameter, but I have my own stompers, so just saying. The company does a good job keeping the cost down on the crocks and I would not like paying a higher price just to get an unneeded larger stomper with the package. Just look at the included wood stomper as a bonus item and not a top end stomper. Thanks, Humble House for making a well-designed, affordable and quality product!Daniel D. Easy to use. Works great.
I like to garden and cook. But I've always been intimidated by the idea of fermenting foods. So when I decided to try it, I decided to research and purchase equipment specifically designed for the job. After reading many reviews and googling recipes, I chose this product. It arrived very securely packaged with all the advertised contents. I cleaned everything thoroughly and boiled the stone weights for good measure.I went about shredding, salting, pounding and squeezing the cabbage until there was enough moisture to cover the cabbage once inside the krock. On my first try I used red cabbage and added garlic. Probably too much garlic because I love garlic. I fermented for two weeks, the minimum of most recipes I perused. It was ok, but there was an aftertaste I didn't care for.So I tried it again without getting cute and left out the garlic and used plain ol' green cabbage. The product was great sauerkraut like Grandma used to make. My third batch is fermenting now with just a tad of garlic to experiment. I eat kraut two or three times a week and this 2 liter unit appears to make enough or me alone before I run out. I find the prep work to be laborious, but not so much to deter me from making this great probiotic side dish. So much cheaper than buying the unpasteurized varieties in specialty stores. This is a great product, and easy to use and maintain. It hasn't been empty since I opened the box and first put it to use.

Highly Recommend
First off, I am a Master Food Preserver and Food Safety Advisor (certified by WSU). I have taught many classes on canning and food preservation. So when making a purchase I need quality and budget friendly. I have 5 children and purchased the 10L size in 2018. It has been the best crock I have used, it was reasonably priced. And it has been the crock I recommend to others. After several years, I decided to purchase another one. However, as always I do my research because I want to be up to date on tools for my classes. I looked at other ones and decided to make a repeat purchase. I took a look at the reviews and was a little surprised at some of them. And maybe I can lend some clarification for inexperienced or first time buyers. So for the mold problem with weights, anytime you have non-glazed weights you need to clean them differently. There are a few different ways to clean, personal I like to put them in the oven after I wash them with out soap. However the new weights are glazed so a typical wash with soap should do the trick. I also heard some issues with water leaking, personally I have never had that problem but it sounds like some who is inexperienced with using this type of crock. If I had a student come to me with this question I would first look at the crock because you always have a chance of a defective product but if it is fine, it's likely the user putting too much water. Here's the thing, you don't want to fill it, you only want enough to set the lid on because if you have too much water there is a curve to the lid on the bottom and it will siphone the water in. (because it's too much water). Another issue was not being able to put the weights inside. My answer would be you have too much inside the crock. When you buy a crock, you are not getting the same amount of product, meaning if you buy the 10L crock you are not going to get 10L of sauerkraut. Fermentation needs room to ferment. you cant fill it up I would never fill mine 3/4 full ever. I want a good ferment and that takes room, so 2/3 is my limit. If you are having trouble I would recommend getting a bigger size or use less. I hope this helps. When I received my second crock this month it was scratched, I reached out to the company and they sent a replacement. They allowed me to keep the scratched one and donate it to a student. Thank you. I have just given it away. You don't find good customer service very often in this day when profits are more important than people. After my experience I highly recommend this product. I was not given anything to write this, I paid the same price as everyone else. And i hate writing reviews and don't. But felt I should share this. This is a worth while purchase.

Nice crock, unimpressive weights
My crock arrived just in time to pull together my kraut. I unboxed it and am really happy with the size and design. The ceramic weights left a little to be desired. The glaze doesn't cover the inside half. The corner of one has a sizeable crack which makes a great spot for undesirable microbes to grow. And the unglazed portions of the weight had unfinished ceramic stuck to it. I have a spare weight hanging around that I can use so I'm happily not up a creek. However, if you're getting this in on a deadline then I'd suggest giving yourself some wiggle room for replacement time if you're banking on using the supplied weights.**Update**I'm bumping this up another star. Humble House reached out after my original review. In shopping around for weights, I had found artisan weights that were completely glazed and made the false assumption that these would also be fully glazed. The inside half is meant to be unfinished so they stand to dry better. That's fine and dandy, sets my mind at ease a bit. They sent out a replacement weight for the one that was cracked. The replacement came with unfinished plaster on it like the original two had. Not a major deal breaker by any means as it's easily sanded off -- but I still think that's something that could be checked and done when finishing the product before shipping. I did find that the weights weren't quite hefty enough for my first batch of kraut in the crock. The ferment kept pushing up above the brine. I added some more weight and it was fine. I'm on a second batch now of beetkraut and it's staying nicely under the brine. I have a lot more brine going this time thanks to the beets and the humidity/temp hasn't spiked -- so it may have just been unexpected gas build up that overcame the weights in the first batch. I am very happy with this crock. Where others have complained about water leaking, I haven't had any such issue. When I tested it initially to make sure I was filling the trough properly, I found I was over filling it and also that I shouldn't fill the trough then put the lid on. Once I started putting the lid on first then filled the trough only until it covered the "vent" on the lid, everything was fine and water stayed put. I'll probably be ordering a second crock at some point!

Love this crock!
I absolutely love this crock! I purchased it as a newbie to make my own fermented krauts. The reason I picked this particular one was because of the existing reviews, the size, and the color/shape.The crock holds a good amount of veggies but isn't too large for my smaller sized kitchen. It is beautifully constructed and I have not noticed any defects. It came with a wooden tamper to push the vegetables down, weights to place on top of the kraut as it ferments, and some basic instructions to get you started. All very high quality and much appreciated. My first batch is at the 2 week mark and will most likely be ready for us to eat by next week. I was purchasing kraut at the grocery store and farmer's market for around $15 a jar which adds up over time. I find cabbage to be very affordable and feel like this will pay for itself quickly. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

Ease of use and good size
I love this fermenting crock! It was perfect for my sauerkraut. It allows you to pack it in tight, and the weighted pieces keep it packed. I love the cover which allows that little bit of air in, tho I still burped it daily. Its a great size to keep your fermented food in it on a shelf in my fridge. Great product.

Great Crock!
As an experienced fermenter, I've fermented just about anything you can ferment (MANY kinds of sauerkraut, bread and beet kvass, kimchi, black and green tea kombucha, apple cider vinegar and lots of other stuff) and tried many different types of fermentation crocks; glass jars with straight sides, glass lemonade jars with curvy sides, ceramic and stoneware crocks and even buckets. I know what works well and what doesn't work well.I absolutely love this crock! It's substantial without being too heavy and the smooth glazing on the outside and especially on the inside make cleanup a breeze. It has an attractive 'crock-ey' shape (new word) and the water lock lid is great.I especially like the glazed weights. All too often the weights are too small and don't hug the sides of the crock so your ferment can migrate to the top of the brine. And, most weights are usually not glazed. The Humble House Sauerkraut Crock checks both of these boxes for the two segmented weights; they fit inside the crock SNUGLY and are glazed which makes cleanup super easy.I highly recommend this crock for both beginner and experienced fermenters! Well done!

Great crock and excellent customer service
I bought the 10 L crock over 4 years ago, and I've used it ferment quite a few batches. It works great and is easy to clean. The fact that it comes with weights also makes it a good buy, especially now that the weights are glazed (I have the unglazed weights so they need a little more cleaning than the glazed, but it's not hard).I let a batch go for way too long recently, and the bottom of the crock wept onto the shelf. Upon in inspection after cleaning it, there were some little dark blemishes where I think the seeping occurred, so the crock was not longer usable.I contacted Humble House on the weekend, and to my surprise, Cody got back to me right away. I explained the issue, the fact that I let my last fermentation go for longer than normal, and sent some pictures. We corresponded via email back and forth a few times, and Cody let me know he was sending a replacement crock out to me. Excellent customer service! If I ever need an additional crock, or hear of someone that is planning to buy one, I'll definitely recommend the crock from Humble House. While I'm ok with needing to clean the unglazed weights, I may eventually purchased the glazed ones that Humble House now sells.Excellent product + excellent customer service = thumbs up from me.

Beautiful crock and Excellent customer service!
I was very excited to receive my new Humble House sauercrock, but what was delivered to me had numerous cosmetic defects both inside and outside. The cosmetic defects outside I could have tolerated, however the defects inside I couId not. I purchased pottery items regularly and when I saw all the craters and bubbles inside the crock (there were a lot), chip on the lip of the air hole I was doubtful I could use the crock for fermentation, and not just that the crock should not have been packaged up for delivery to a customers home.Amazon should have checked the package prior to shipping as I feel they are the last defence for product quality.I contacted Humble House, sent them all the pictures I took and within a few hours I received an email back, and by the next day a new sauercrok was on the way to me. I received it today and it is absolutely beautiful, without any cosmetic damage inside and outside, the crock was not wobbly at all, as the first one was.Cody was very responsive and professional, he said I could keep the defective one as it would take too much time and would cost me money to send back.So now I have 2 crocks, one for fermenting and one for storing rice :).Thank you Cody and Humble House you are the best!I can't wait to start fermenting.

Funcional y buena calidad

Soo easy to use... and the website is helpful as well.
The only drawback is that the links that the site points you to to obtain other ingredients from Amazon.com, not .ca. The picture is my first batch, with garlic and fennel. Easily makes 2 liters. We keep it on the kitchen counter in the corner, and check the crock channel daily by dipping one's pinky in. If it's wet, you're good. (Note - I placed partial leaves over the kraut in the beginning and pressed, then added the stones and pressed again. Very nice results.) Worth the money - will buy another in the future!
