Would they work if I bought 2 sets as they are from the same company?

As long as they are on the same channel they should work, you will find that if anyone else is on the same channel you will pick them up too. Also you can get larger sets. These are good walkie talkies. I got them for shopping and Ice skating and haven't had a problem with them (other than the odd random person being on the same channel).
