Decently made, but the devotions are questionable…
Disclosure: I am not a fan of the NIV, especially the 2011 NIV. As the NIV goes, I would much rather it be the 1984, if I had to use an NIV bible. And while I prefer the KJV, I am open to other translations and have several of them on my shelves. So when I saw this, I was reminded of the “Every Man’s Bible” and thought this might be a worthwhile companion. It is a well-crafted Bible, feels good in the hands, and the print and paper is decent (though there is some ghosting/bleed-through of the pages. Translation issues aside, the “devotions” are puzzling at times and, at other times, just absurd (if not borderline heretical). One example is a “devotion” which purports to sit Joseph (the husband of Mary) down for an interview. The interviewer asks him questions he provides “answers.” I’m no biblical scholar, I’m no hardliner, but this kind of addition to what is supposed to be the Holy Word of God, is about as off-putting as it gets. I could not stomach it. Commentary in study Bibles is one thing. It’s clear (at least to most), that such commentary are man’s words and opinions. But actually making up words in something like an “interview” of Joseph just goes too far, especially when being used as a “devotion” in a “devotional” Bible. Just one old Marine’s opinion, one who long ago was saved and began walking with Christ. It just doesn’t sit right. If it’s helpful for you, so be it. But there is enough of the beautiful, actual, Word of God to read and reflect upon, that it really doesn’t require “interviews” and made up words be put within a Bible. In fact, the Word is pretty clear about taking away, or adding to, His Word. In any case, since there are no other reviews for this yet, I just wanted to write one to let folks know (some of) what they’re getting.
