It folds in half and has velcro to fix it to the box. I have it half size in my car all the time and only extend it when I've been shopping. I'd recommend this item - its has held lots of heavyish gear (car tyre toolkit and wrench) as well as my previously-bagged stuff (tyre inflator kit, maps, tow rope, blanket) and been accessed on and off over the months. The top uses velcro to seal down onto the sides, which I expected to be poor, but it holds well, feels secure and peeals away for access easily. Other claims that the box doesn't slide around much in the boot are also valid. Mine is on a boot-liner which is plastic rather than carpet, and it doesn't slide much on that.
