Sisters Sally and Gillian Owens (Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman) are both afflicted by the same curse - their lovers always die before their time. Two new suitors are on the scene (Aidan Quinn and Goran Visnjic), but it may take a few spells from the sisters' supernaturally gifted aunts (Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing) to keep their loves alive.

Magical sentimental romance
Have watched this many times, usually with the family but it never fails to keep me entertained, happy and positive. The polarity of the sisters are perfectly acted by Kidman and Bullock and their real world character differences work brilliantly together. The film has lovely simple metaphors running through it which adults will smile at and I love it for that - unpretentious reminders of what matters in life. Some of the scenes were pun intended, magical, beautifully lit and filmed and a believable film version of the Sorcerer's Apprentice, and other scenes were really quite freaky and menacing - each complimenting each other but making the differences acute, like the characters of the two leading ladies.Wasn't happy about the slightly candy sick final rooftop scene, but the sensitively observed human emotions and actions running through a film about magic, made this a perfect feel good film for me. PS have never seen Kidman looking so naughty or Bullock so gentle :-)

Not Quite as Exciting as the Cast
The DVD itself is a two sided affair with the film on one side and the extra features on the reverse. It's described as such in the product description, so this didn't come as a surprise. Persoanlly I dislike this format, the labeling is very small and confusing and it may well be a matter of trial and error before you get it right. The film is an entertaining little comedy about witches and magic and spells with a romance or two thrown in. Sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gilly (Nicole Kidman) are witches, brought up by their witch aunts Jet (Dianne Wiest) and Frances (Stockard Channing). A family spell means that any man they love will die. Gilly is wild and plays fast, she parties and has hunky boyfriends for whom she doesn't care deeply. Sally doesn't want to be a witch, she wants to be normal and lead a normal life. There is much witchery by the mischievous aunts, Sally falls deeply in love and has a family, Gilly is in a twisted relationship with the Bulgarian cowboy Angelov (Goran Visnjic). After the unavoidable death of Sally's beloved husband, the sisters reunite, Sally helps Gilly deal with the sinister Angelov, who just won't stay dead once they get rid of him. There is much magicking and casting and reversing of spells, one wanting to bring back her man, the other trying to get rid of her undead one. It's all rather confused, but good fun for a rainy Sunday afternoon. The cast is rather more exciting than the story. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman seem to be having much fun as the sisters. Bullock's role is very much in keeping with her usual romcoms, but Kidman shows she has a lighter side and really has a bit of fun dancing and behaving like a wild teenager. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are good fun as the witch aunts, but they haven't an awful lot to do here. Aidan Quinn is likable as Bullock's love interest, but it's Goran Visnjic I liked the best in this. He seems to be having some real fun with his thouroughly unlikable character and he and Kidman make for a refreshingly different couple. Pity he doesn't have more screen time.
