Finish is rough and they need sharpened out of the box but work well

After reading other reviews these were as expected, cheaply made and not well finished. However, this didn't bother me because I felt that as a knifemaker, I could use my shop equipment to put a nice edge and finish on the tools, and I did. First step was to use my Foredom rotary tool to wire brush the entire surface of each tool. This brightened them up and made them look half way presentable. There are still some minor pits a gouges in non critical surfaces, and a may use the belt grinder to smooth those out eventually. I did however use the belt grinder to smooth out the hammer surface as there was a ridge formed at the edge that was higher than the middle. This was true of each tool. I ground the surface flat and chamfered the edge to help prevent mushrooming. The cutting edge on the tool was not all that sharp and also needs attention. Again, using the belt grinder I dressed the edges on each tool to a crisp sharp profile and then using a stropping belt on the belt grinder polished the edges of each tool. I now have tools that are very sharp and look good enough that I don't mind seeing them on my bench. So for an initial cost of $17 and two hours of putzing around in the shop I now have a decent set of belt end punches that easily cut through the 8-9 oz. leather that I normally use in making knife sheaths. I would only recommend these tools to a person that has the resources to do what I'd done, otherwise you're going to have to spend the $35 to $45 per tool for Osborne or some of the others. I bought the V shaped set and after seeing the results of my efforts will buy the rounded belt end punches as well and do the same.

These came loose in a bag, and are dull. If you look at the cutting edges, they have large burrs on them from the "sharpening" process. Get ready to break out a sledge hammer to get these to work decently - I had to whack on them a handful of times to cut through 8oz veg tan.I have yet to try to clean up the edges, but I'm not convinced these will hold an edge at all. The steel is very cheap feeling. These should definitely only be considered very beginners tools, or for people who use them very infrequently. If you need them for production use - go spend some money on better ones, and don't waste your money on these.

Great shape, good size, However my punches were really dull. After about 30 min on my sharpening wheel, they cut fine., but be prepared to sharpen them before use.

A leather punch should be sharp enough to punch garment weight leather. Even after 10-15 hard wacks with a mallet, it couldn't cut through it. Tried another. Same problem.

many of the cheap punches I've bought are dirty, rough, and dull, these definitely fit in that category..... the shape is good, but the edges have an uneven grind, and are mostly dull, with slightly sharp spots.... they won't cut clean lines, in my experience, and take time to level out and get a good edge.... probably better time spent creating....

I like the variety of sizes. The tools were sharp right out of the package. The make nice clean cuts.

These are very well made, solid and sharp. They cut leather very well.

I ultimately choose the wrong punches but they ultimately fit the description. This may not really be an Amazon issue but Purolator did not actually attempt delivery and, rather, made it available for pick up at the depot or to have it actually delivered 4 days later.
