I’ve home-dyed and salon-dyed my hair for 15 years. For box dye, this stuff is as good as it gets. The color is rich and it lasts. It’s hard to find rich, beautiful red tones in box dyes, but I’ve stuck with this brand since I found it. They even adjusted the formulas in the last year or so, such that it no longer leaves any temporary stains in my shower. Even with the old formula that did stain, the stains always rinsed out on their own after a few weeks of just regular shower use. So don’t panic if you see them at first (I rent, so I’m always nervous about accidental damage.)

This is the absolute best box hair color I have ever used. Have been at home and salon dyeing my hair for over 30 years. The color is identical to the box; a rich, multi tone hue. I have gray roots, and this colors them completely and blends seamlessly with the rest of my hair. I've used this same color multiple times, and each time my hair is colored consistently. The color stays true until I color again, about 6-8 weeks later. The included pre color for the ends of your hair is very useful and I encourage people to use it. I think it helps with the consistent results. The conditioner included is very nourishing and leaves my hair soft with body; does not weigh it down. The instructions are easy to follow. The smell of the prepared hair color is pleasant and not overwhelming. I have a sensitive scalp and usually have a slight burning sensation on my scalp when I color with other box dyes, but not with this one. Be aware: as it states in the instructions, the color of the mixed hair color is NOT indicative of the final result. The mixed color you apply, with this particular shade is a bright orange color; like buffalo wings sauce!! Scared me during application, but no worries, the actual final color is a true, vibrant match like on the box.

This color is great on my hair which is very dark brown with red sort of undertone naturally. It looks like a really dark color when in normal light, or in the dark, but in the sun it has a fiery red highlight and I love that. I wash my hair every other day, so no, it doesn’t last long and I have to redo it a lot, but that is because of the frequency of my hair washing. It will last through the amount of washes it claims on the box, I just use them up fast. When it fades a bit the highlight isn’t as red, but it’s still there. I have never seen this color in any other boxed dye. If your hair is drier, condition your hair really well after using. Not just with what’s included, but get a good conditioner. I have very dry hair, all dyes make that worse. If you are sitting in the sun, it will look dark where the sun is not hitting and red where it is. I think that’s awesome. One more thing, when you apply it, it will look pastel pink after you first mix it, it will turn orange on your head while processing, then it will turn dark purple and it rinses red like someone has been slaughtered in your shower, and if no one has, then it’s just the dye has changed completely. but don’t let all this change make you think you were sent the wrong dye or worry you. The first time I mixed it and it was pastel pink I thought I might have bought the incorrect color. But that’s just how it is.

Good gray coverage and comes off skin easily. Love the color.

This product is wow...My hair is very soft after using it..(My hair isnthick so I did use additional conditioner I have hand as the box didnt have enough for me and i did t wanna use 2). I eas afraid to use it after using Feria all my years if fuing but Feria fails with covering my grey or lasting..Its only day 1 but my hair feels very healthy..no chemical smell from the appliance...I wish companies cared about us thick hair girls too so we don't waste product for an additional box but so far im not disappointed.

Latest Update: Please read the whole review, but I learned something new. I decided to dig through some reviews of others who got the rich caviar. Others also complained about some of the same things. Another poster mentioned that the creme came out white and then got darker later. That's what happened to mine, and my hair also came out almost black. Another poster said her product never developed past orange. I did think it was strange that the product stayed orange for so long. Another mentioned having allergic reactions, and never having had that before... My conclusion is that you might want to try buying it at the store first to see what it SHOULD look like. That way you can compare. I think there may have been some inconsistencies in production. I used to work for Joico so I am familiar with the manufacturing process of dyes, shampoos and so on. Here is my original review: Okay, I'm leaving this review off the first 2 boxes I bought. In general, I'm sensing some inconsistencies with this product. 1. The first time I used this the color came out absolutely stunning. I literally had never seen a more gorgeous hair color/silk/shine in my life. It was nothing like the burgundies or purples you're used to. I don't think I had ever seen this particular color ever in my entire life. It was such a different shade of purple. It was breathtakingly beautiful (rich caviar). With that said, I got a massive allergic reaction to it the first time. I had never had a reaction in my entire life to any dye, and I've dyed my hair a lot.. 2. I let my hair grow out about 2 inches before coloring again so whatever color it's supposed to have should have shown perfectly at my roots. I did not have an allergic reaction this time, but the color came out MUCH blacker (soft black) and I can only see the color (purple) in the sun or if I lift my hair up to the light. When the light shines down on my hair you would have no idea that it's not soft black. I'm a little disappointed. I want that "rich caviar" color very much. I will try this one more time (later on when my roots grow out again), and if it doesn't work then I'll have to find something else with that same color. Notes: The color both times came out significantly darker than what's on the front of the box. I really don't understand why they use that image. The color is correct, but the tone in reality is much darker. I think I'd need blonde hair to achieve the color on the box, and I already have dark/soft-ash black hair naturally. Cons: The smell is horrific. Probably one of the worst smelling box dyes I've ever used.

This hair dye I find, stains your skin a little more than other dyes I have used. I put Vaseline around my face, neck, ears, shoulders etc so that if I have a little accident the stain wipes off easier, no scrubbing involved. Also, if you wash it off in the shower, be careful because it will stain in there too. It also smells very strong of perfume. Other than that my hair turned out exactly as pictured and it’s all even. Not as harsh on your hair as other dyes.

It’s a very nice shade of red regardless, but the shade isn’t as dark as it is on the cover of the box so don’t let that fool you. But also don’t let it stop you from buying it either because you can just go over it with some black semi-permanent hair dye to make it as dark as you want like I did a few weeks after taking those pictures. Very nice red, but remember 1) permanent box dye is bad for your hair 2) permanent box dye is hard to get out (ESPECIALLY RED)

Used as directed and have colored my hair before, just not using this brand and was upset by the result: No color change. My hair is medium to dark brown and with the exception of a few gray hairs, my hair is the same color after as before I used this dye. Also the few gray hairs that did turn red, the red is bright, not like on the box. The ammonia smell while using was also overwhelming, making me cough and my eyes water, I've never had this issue with other brands of dye. Will never be using this brand again. Waste of time and money.
