Can this be used in cosmetics?

It would do no harm to the user if it was put in cosmetics e.g. lipstick. However I would be more wary about the possibility of bacterial growth. This is a problem when introducing edible ingredients into non edible products and would most likely reduce the shelf life of your product. You can try but I would highly recommend that test be conducted such as a petri dish smear. Don't be put off as aqua (water) is a common ingredient in many non edible products, but aqua does not harbour bacteria alone. Hope this helps.

Can this sweetener have a laxative effect?

Yes, sorbitol can have a laxative effect. Erithrytol is a good alternative if you intend to use it regularly, as it has a similar taste, is usually cheaper and does not have this problem.

I found xylitol to have a bitter taste, is this the same?

No Sorbitol and xylitol are different. Xylitol is not at all bitter at n my experience. The above is not xylitol

is it a suitable alternative

The sorbitol is a natural fruit sugar and therfore does the same job as cane or beet sugar. sweetens with no after taste. but with the added advantage of having little or no effect on sugar levels and therefore ideal for those with diebetes.
