Yes, it will. In fact, it's a teensy bit hard to get off, so be careful not to spill when you open it. The lid covers the edges of the board completely; that is, it goes over the top and down half an inch on all four sides. Your work should be dust-free when you get back to it. Have fun, newbie!

It is rigid enough, but I think the size might make it difficult to use on your lap without spilling. You might think about getting a thin board of the size you want to help keep the tray steady.

No, it does not come with instructions for making beads. There are a lot of really fine books out there for not only making the beads themselves but for making necklaces and earrings. They're also a lot of companies that sell beads pre-made. They also will have books of instructions many of them. This device the relay helps and making any necklace. It holds the beads in place they don't roll around on the table top, and you can easily see whether or not they're symmetrical if that's the way you want to make it. I've had one of these devices in the past I've actually worn it out. But it was also about 40 or 50 years old. I decided I deserved a new one they're wonderful.
