Hand Lettering 201: Intermediate Lettering and Design Basics

Now, I don't even remember how I discovered Chalkfulloflove... but Sarah is super endearing, I follow her on instagram and own a Stars Hollow Fall Festival sweatshirt and now I bought this book... so I'm in deep guys. I love how many different lettering styles there are in the book and the design and project sections are nice additions. I have done some self taught brush lettering (also with some practice sheets I found online) previously and I learned traditional kind of unadorned calligraphy when I was in elementary school so I have some basic skills (emphasis on basic lol.) But because of this previous experience I skipped 101 and went straight to 201, just FYI. The book came wrapped in plastic and was pristine, the paper felt really nice and on the whole it looked lovely. There are plenty of places to practice lettering directly in the book (although I personally prefer to use scratch paper) and multiple different styles to practice. I have started tracing the letters to practice first so that I get a feel for the strokes. I attached a photo of my lettering from holiday cards this year from before I got the book. I'll try to remember to update after I get to practice the different styles (I've only practiced the hillary style style so far which I included a picture of :) She has included some ideas for spiffing up your envelopes, making greeting cards, place cards, and gift-y things also! But really, the nice thing about this skill is pretty writing improves all the things. So yeah! I would recommend the book for anyone wishing to expand their repertoire, mix up their current lettering situation, and also get some cute little ideas for using their newfound skills as well :)

I absolutely love this book! I skipped over the first of the two books, Hand lettering 101 and jumped right in to 201. This is the first hand lettering book I’ve ever bought and I am new to the art. I found myself getting lost in it, practicing for hours. I find it very relaxing and fun. The book includes Many different styles and fonts with room to practice. There are several project ideas and tips for beginners. The book is very well made. Heavy duty, spiral bound with pages that do not bleed through. My only complaint is I wish there was more! I want to keep writing. So maybe print out some of the sheets to practice again and again. Very thoughtfully written by an author who has a real love for hand lettering. Her enthusiasm shines through and she writes as though she’s sharing her best advise and tips to a friend. I would definitely recommend this book for beginners or the more experienced. I love it so much that I plan to purchase Hand lettering 101! You can use any pen, marker, or pencil but I used Tombow fudenosuke brush pens and Sakura micron 05 pens and they worked very well. A great book at a great price!!

If there were 10 stars I would rate it that. I can not get over how much I love this book. For a while, I’ve taken such an interest in calligraphy... all of which stemmed from my grandpa. He used to write me letters with his calligraphy and I loved it and I always wanted to write like that too. I had forgotten about it for a while until a friend of mine shared her lettering on an Instagram story and I was in awe! I had to learn how she did it! I asked for 101 for Christmas and within a week I was finished with the whole book. I immediately asked for 201 for my birthday. And yes, you guessed it, within a week that one was done too. It’s so therapeutic and fun and I absolutely love it. It’s not like traditional calligraphy but rather calligraphy 2.0 lol it’s got an extra flair to it that’s so fun. The pages and lines are just the right size for you to practice, and the projects are so fun. I love how the author, Sarah, encourages you to take risks with the letters and make it your own. Ever since, I’ve lettered on everything and practice at least 5 times a week!!! And all my school books and notebooks never looked better! Now I can’t wait to get my hands on an iPad and pencil so I can do the iPad lettering practice! This book is everything and will seriously step up your handwriting/cursive game to a whole new level. This is by far my new favorite hobby. I can’t wait to letter my wedding invitations some day!!! Honestly, I don’t know if I could speak more highly of this book.

I was a HUGE fan of 101, so I don't know why I waited so long to get 201! This book is a little bit more challenging, but I have all the different style's she offers in this book! Working a little bit everyday with which ever font matches my mood for that day. I love that she includes which pens she recommends (especially because I use to think you could use the same pen for ALL fonts). She did a great job on both the design and instruction in this book. If you enjoyed 101, you MUST get this. You could probably get away without having the foundations that were taught in 101, but I recommend working through 101 first then grabbing this gem!

Nice book!

There is something so soothing and relaxing about lettering and this book killed it with the variety of lettering fonts to learn from. I always practice these and eventually my brain just makes it's own changes to fit my style. This is a life saver for people like me who just need a well written source to start from and go from there. The extra projects added in the back of this book were also helpful for brainstorming ideas. I would recommend this to people who are into lettering, but just need that little extra push to broaden your scope. Also, tracing paper is time consuming, but it will help!

Very pretty book started it recently. I have some lettering experience it I consider myself still a beginner. I hope this book can elevate my lettering since I’ve been a little stuck at the same level for a while. The book is very well constructed and really pretty , the pages are thick enough for ink not to bleed through too much. I’m using the pentel touch on them and there is almost no ghosting. It has many alphabets to try and learn and all of them a very pretty!!! I’m thinking to get the 101 as well

Brought both HL101 and HL201. Fab books. Great for people who want to learn different types of modern lettering. Easy to follow and understand. Blank pages for you to practice in or use another notebook.
