Spice Up Your Life: Liverpool, the 90s and Roy Evans

Like Evans' Liverpool, a missed opportunity
Evans' Liverpool, in conventional wisdom, were big time Charlies defined by excess, unprofessionalism and ultimately failure. Yet, they are remembered, and not simply due to the white suits, but equally because of the aesthetic football they played and the fun they appeared to have doing it. In many ways, they are cool Britannia and New Labour in microcosm - an age of unashamed optimism that in the end amounted to very little.Consequently, there is a real and novel story to tell here. Regrettably, this work is not it - amounting to little more than a narrative, match by match account of the period. It delves little into the wider context of the era that makes it so fascinating nor does it embark on a revisionist narrative required to transform Evans' team from maligned to appreciated.Rather like Evans' Liverpool, in the end it is a missed opportunity.
