The Last Guardian of Magic

A Hidden Gem
Every so often as an avid reader you stumble across a novel that so exceeds your expectations that you are left in wonder as to how this book has not received more attention. The Last Guardian of Magic is such a novel. Fresh and original in both plot and conception and coupled with superb character development this book was a true pleasure to read from start to finish. With many first time authors the reader can pick up on their awkwardness in either plotting (twists that are too contrived), descriptions that are far too narrative driven or characters that lack personality and leave the reader having a hard time caring about them. Mr. Andrews novel suffers from none of these and he writes with a confidence and ease that moves the story along quickly and in directions that keeps the suspense tight and builds nicely to an epic finish.I have read many fantasy/magic novels by much more well-known authors that were not done half as well as this one. My suggestion would be that a major publishing house acquire the rights to this book and and get it out to the public quickly. Fans of Harry Potter or Terry Brooks would greatly enjoy this novel. It is a near perfect genre blend of magic and science(remember the author was a biology major at Central Michigan University) and the inclusion of science adds a verisimilitude to the story that is lacking in many fantasy novels. Unfortunately as other reviewers have noted this novel has been somehow typecast as a teen novel-in my opinion only because the two main protagonists are teenagers. The Last Guardian of Magic has a much broader appeal than to just that audience as there are some gritty realism in the novel that makes it read more like a current adventure tale as much as a teen fantasy. In summary I usually do not give out many 5 star reviews but this book absolutely deserves it as it succeeds on so many levels-well done Mr. Andrews and I hope someday this book gets the attention it deserves.

Captivating, Fun & Well Written
I'm not much for fiction usually, but this book was seriously hard to put down. It hooked me with amazing story starters, well created characters and a great description of the surroundings and happenings. This book, which SERIOUSLY should be a series, is the only one I can think of that could contend with Harry Potter. It's that good.

Not the Randall Andrews who teaches writing.
This is a DISCLAIMER, not a review: I bought this book but have not yet read it. For anyone who is searching for the Randall Andrews who teaches writing, it is not this author. That author is Randall "Jay" Andrews. Several of his students, including myself, have bought this book thinking it was written by our instructor. It was not. I'm just trying to clear up any future misunderstandings.

Change age reading level
This book is great! Why on earth it's been designated to 9 through 12 yrs of age is beyond me. I'm 63 and think it is a great read, hate to put it down. Good work Randall.

I am in love.
I purchased this book because of a good recommendation from a friend. Since purchase, I've thrust it at every person I know and made them read the first chapter. It is really an amazing book. I'm hoping for a continuation! Read this book, you will not regret it.
