Great Hardware - NO Support
I'm impressed with the overall build quality and functioning of the MPK261. It's mainly a sturdy plastic construction on a metal base. All the controls seem to be of good quality. The keybed appears robust and reliable - with a firm sprung action. I have a number of keyboards, including one with a full graded weighted hammer action - and I'd say the Akai is the heaviest / firmest action of them all. That said, it plays well now I'm used to it. The product falls down big-time when it comes to manufacturer support. I've raised 3 support questions / enquiries over the past 8 days and had no response from Akai - aside from an automated "give us your feedback" style email. The product is very capable and flexible and, therefore, quite complex to set up. I found the Logic-Pro set-up procedure didn't work as expected and therefore need some help with it. I have managed to set something up for myself, but it took a couple of fairly full days to do it - but I've only sorted out basic mixer and transport controls so far. Also, the bundled plug-ins that come with the MPK don't work on Mac Catalina. The plug-ins promise to be really useful - and so their current failure is very disappointing. At this point it's touch and go whether I return the product and look for an alternative. The absence of help from Akai is becoming very frustrating. I'll wait for Akai's response for a couple more days with the protective film still in place over the display and the packaging nearby.

Didn't live up to the hype...
Bought this hoping to replace my current keyboard and pad controller setup but sent it back as I was really unimpressed with the performance of the pads. I liked the tension and sensitivity of them, but unless you hit the pads fairly centrally with the right jabbing motion you occasionally get double triggered notes. This means it's particularly difficult to perform rolls without unwanted midi notes creeping in and screwing up your timing. I never experienced this with my first Akai MPD16, it doesn't happen with my NI Maschine and it doesn't happen with the pads on my Nektar Impact LX49 either. I also recently trialed Akai's MPD226 which had the same annoying issue. The MPK261 seems like the best product of its kind in terms of features but I can't justify tolerating issues like this for a product this expensive.

It`s rade unwaighted than semi-weighted
I`ve baught it because it was advertised as a semi-weighted kaeybaorad. I have a digital piano, Kawai CA-79, but its wooden, hammered keys are a little to hard for me. Another my keaboard, Dexibell L3 Classico has unweighted kes, too soft for my daily pratice. I looked for something between and baught Kawai MPK 261 to find that its keys.... are softer than keys of my L3...

Does exactly what I needed
Who wants to have a separate MIDI keyboard, drum pads and a control surface? Not me, so I took the plunge and purchased the Akai MPK261 - the 61 key variant. I does take up quite a bit of space but it has made my composing workflow much smoother. Setting it up wasn't trivial but I use Cubase and one of the advantages of the Akai is that you can get a file to import the mapping from Cubase functions (like moving the faders) to the sliders on the MPK261. So it's easier to set up than my previous MIDI keyboard/control surface/ percussion pads - in fact I never got any of three working properly to the extent that this now does, almost straight out of the box. All in all I am very happy with this product.

Basic midi functionality
As far as modern controller midi functions go this is pretty basic. I’d say the bare minimum functionality, but what is there seems to work well. Pads feel pretty good to me - part of the reason I bought it. My gut feel is it may be superseded soon if manufacturer want to keep reputation. It cannot send custom sysex messages, the sysex it mentions in manual is only its preset configurations. I read on the internet it can receive sysex, but I’ve yet to find any Akai documentation on this. Physically it’s fairly well made but the is a shallow curve I’ve the keybed length. I can only think this is a shrinkage issue in upper injection moulded case vs lower steel bottom plate. It doesn’t affect playability for me. The key hinge is right at the visible key end so a short arc length. Those who are used to full length keys found on more upmarket keyboards probably won’t like the feel. All in all - for what I read as a fairly expensive midi controller in the market I find it pretty unimpressive. I was considering a Novation as an alternative but it gets worse quality reviews on internet, I’ve not used one so don’t know if it’s any better in functionality or quality.

Excellent clavier maitre
