The moisture from the evaporating water helps prevent the wheat from drying out and will hopefully prolong the lifespan of your heat pack **Q: can these be washed in washing machine?** A: Hello. No they can't. The bag is full of wheat and getting that wet would ruin it. **Q: Can you use this as a cold pack I.e. place in freezer?** A: It would work, but not terribly well. I don't think that it will hold the cold very well and would probably be a bit cool for a short while rather than proper cold for any significant period.
