Q: As someone with no watercolour experience - What else do I need to buy apart from this to get started?

You will need some not(cold pressed) grain fin water colour paper 140lb or more, poor paper may puddle or wave.Masking tape to secure to a board and get a nice clean line and margin to mount later. A mixed selection of sized brushes 12 round, 5 or 6 round and 1" flat that should help you to get started you can then slowly build your brushes up.Buy the best you can afford as they should last a long time if you take care of them.

Q: Do they dry quite chalky or nice and smooth? I like to work over what I paint with pens etc and chalky watercolours destroy my pens.

I use them for pen and wash. I've used them for 50 years with no complaints

No you don't get the bottle .At least I didn't. Also ,it doesn't list the bottle in contents.

they're all in separate plastic containers so you can buy colours to replace them
