The opening on the opposite side of the tape pullout.** A: The peg at end of tape fits into the hole on tape container and then you press the button on the container and it tightens the tape automatically, giving you a much more accurate reading than holding by hand. It locks it in place so that when you remove the peg, your measurement is still showing. I first saw them at a Weight Loss Clinic and they used them to get more consistency between folks doing the measuring. **Q: Is the vinyl material cloth like? Can you use it to measure length of baby and garments?** A: It's more vinyl-ish than cloth like. And it's meant to measure circumference. You can use it to measure straight distances, but you'll have to start measuring at the 2-inch mark and subtract 2 from the length you find.
