MOEN 1224 Replacement Faucet Cartridge Kit Fits Most Double Handle Moen Faucets and Tub/Showers

I've bought several of these over the years to replace the cartridges in a variety of Moen faucets in my house. They work just like the originals, but you need to be careful during removal and installation. For the first one I replaced, I did not have the tool shown in the picture (Moen 14272 Cartridge Retainer Removal Tool for 2 Handle Cartridge), so I used needle-nose pliers to twist out the lock ring that holds the cartridge in place. This worked, but it's tough to tighten the lock ring properly, and it took several adjustments to get it to work smoothly. With the proper tools, this is a very easy removal and installation that most DIYers can handle. A couple of notes: 1️⃣ Turn off the water at the shut-off valve; you cannot replace this with the water on. 2️⃣ Use a Rubber Strap Wrench to remove the sink handle to avoid scratching the fixture. I tried wrapping the handle with painter's tape and using a regular wrench, but it damaged the handle. Don't do this. 3️⃣ Use the Cartridge Retainer Removal Tool to remove the nut that locks the cartridge in place. 4️⃣ Pull the existing cartridge out with needle-nose pliers (I think there is a tool for this as well, but I've never used it). There is a cap (either blue or red) that needs to be removed and reused. 5️⃣ Reverse the steps to install the new cartridge, but don't over-tighten the cartridge. Overall, this was a great purchase and value, especially compared to paying a plumber to replace this.

works perfectly. removing old one without a special tool is possible if you barely turn under sink supply valve "on" ---and i mean BARELY..... the pressure will push the old one out. i then used a plastic straw and finger to siphon out the water in the socket so the new one can just push right in, then install the collar/nut. no more drips

After receiving and installing a day ago, I felt I should identify a minor issue during the install. Knowing not everyone is a license plumber, which I am not, but I am mechanically inclined. So, after removing the old leaky cartridges I wanted to make sure the top portion of the cartridge would be aligned/fitted to the handle position when I removed the handles. Which for my bathroom sink the handles had to be in fully open position. Make sure the water is turned off. When I inserted the cartridge into the handle and noted how the old cartridge came out. I could not get the new cartridge to seat correctly. After a couple of tries and inspecting the new ones and verifying they matched the old ones, I figured it out. Now this is where I can see some homeowners thinking they do not fit and return them. The Moen cartridge is a 2-part cartridge, the outer case and the inner I'll call valve. While holding the handle I inserted the cartridge into the inside of the handle enough to rotate the inner portion of the valve while holding the outer part and the cartridge fell into place. Basically, I had to rotate the inner part slightly to fit into the handle and tighten the set screw. Now depending on the type of faucet, some homeowners may not run into the issue. The new cartridges fix both leaky faucets, and given I ran into this issue I gave a 4 star for now and hopefully they don't develop a problem any time soon. Hope this information helps.

The MOEN brand faucet cartridges are the best quality in my many years of experience. The first MOEN cartridges that came with the MOEN faucet that I bought back in Dec 1998--I keep detailed records--lasted 23 years before finally needing replacement. In June 2022 I replaced the H and C cartridges with non-OEM brand carts and the Hot one only lasted 3.5 years. I knew then that I need to replace it with a genuine MOEN cartridge so that's what I bought because the quality is unmatched by competitors although you pay more for the MOEN ones. It's worth the extra money in the long term! Two notes: 1. Follow directions. 2. Use a bit of silicone lubricant on the two O-rings before installing.
