Halfway in, excellent overall e-commerce resource. Just needs an update
Got this book in September 2023 although I knew it was made in 2017.I got this book primarily to learn the Liquid template language and there is a good early on explanation of how it works. I have a strong WooCommerce background so if you're coming from there then it's all pretty straight forward. I'm not 100% sure if the author intends for you to create a 'final project' as most dev books have you do; so far it just looks like a breakdown of the different areas of Shopify which he covers well.As I mentioned it was written in 2017 so it does contain a bit of deprecated information such as using ThemeKit, Slate, Gulp/Grunt, and some other tools. Shopify currently now uses a new tool, Shopify CLI which works a lot like NPM so you can have a local environment to work on offline. I don't really mind for progressive enhancement reasons but it does force me to read the current docs to compare the changes for I feel I'm learning more just by that. The reason why I give this book 4 starts is the author does a fantastic job on explaining the non-technical aspects of e-commerce such as branding, marketing, ux/ui and managing customer expectations. It's just an overall balanced primer on e-commerce, not just Shopify. I am sure if there is an update to this book it will be 5/5.

More focus on concepts than on technical aspects
The author spends the first pages teaching about devops, tools and process. When he engages in the core subject he talks more of design, digital marketing concepts than liquid, shopify structure, configuration etc; and when he does that it's in a superficial way.

If you aren't already a computer professional don't bother with this book.
This book is written for the computer professional. I have been working with computers for 40 years but not professionally. This book assumes a high level of understanding that I apparently don't have. I am at present looking for a book that will teach me how to read this one. It may work well as a textbook for a class but without some help it is gibberish.

Not so much
Save your money. Nicely written, just not worth the price!

Overall a solid "bible" for Shopify Theme dev
So far, the book has come in handy a few times. Wish a bit more was spent on some "edge" cases, or more advanced theme configs, but overall a solid "bible" for Shopify Theme dev.

Understanding Custom Shopify Store Development
Such a great book. It clearly gives the bare bones for someone to develop their vision for a custom Shopify store. While it is a highly niche topic and includes lots of necessary jargon that makes it difficult for a newcomer, for the initiated person looking for more information where they have also found a lack online about custom development, this will provide.I strongly suggest you read this prior to dealing with any Shopify developers to be on the same level.I give it 5 stars because it was just such a captivating read that included so many great notes Iโll now use in my custom Shopify store. No doubt I have 20 new notes on new ideas and specs for the website Iโm creating.
